Bone Conduction Headphones: Gimmick Or Godsend

WI-C400 In-ear Bluetooth Headphones with Neckband

Although true wireless earbuds have been hogging the limelight as of late, theres another breed of specialized wireless earphones garnering attention: bone conduction headphones. These have deep-seated roots in the hearing aid industry, but naysayers and die-hard fans are abound. Lets break down whether or not bone conduction headsets are a gimmick or something more.

Editors note: this article was updated on April 12, 2021, to make note of the Bose Sport Earbuds as an alternative to bone conduction headphones.

Bose Soundsport Wireless Earbuds

BoseSoundSport Wireless Headphones were engineered with workout performance in mind. This neckband can take gruelling punishment and still keep ticking, all the while remaining firmly in place in your ears as run, jump, bounce, and move back and forth.

What we like: Sweat resistant with an IPX4 ratings, NFC pairing and 6 hours battery life

What we dont like: The product no longer held its charge after a year

Standout Features:

There is a lot to love about the Bose SoundSport wireless earbuds including the impressive EQ volume controls. There is a remote control directly built into the headset that makes it simple to adjust the volume, switch tracks on your MP3 player, and pause or play your favorite songs. The convenience of this feature is wonderful because you can access your audio files without ever needing to turn on your phone or the listening device.

Bluetooth pairing is pretty interesting with this device as well. Believe it or not, it has voice prompts that aid when pairing one or more devices. The prompts will tell you the next steps to take to accomplish swift and effective connectivity. Other devices make it so hard to pair their headsets with Bluetooth enabled audio MP3 players and smart phones.

The only issue is potential longevity problems. One reviewer claimed that his headset no longer held its charge after a year. While this never happened to me personally, it did happen to someone so it certainly bears repeating and keeping this information in mind.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Bluetooth True Wireless Earbuds

The wireless earbuds’ drivers are constructed from top-quality components that work very effectively to reproduce very authentic audio. They’re optimized at each end of the spectrum and tuned by AKG to a proprietary guide that ensures their response is very accurate.

The bass is substantial in the mix with good headroom. It’s backed by the assistance of a volume driver, giving the low frequencies a bit of a bass boost. The treble end is bright and helps to provide much-needed clarity to provide crisp audio and noise.

Pros:

+ Charge on the go with carrying case. + Exceptional drivers for great sound. + Premium audio. + Ambient Aware mode and noise cancellation.

Sennheiser Hd1 Wireless Headphones

The HD1 wireless headset from Sennheiser combines futuristic audio, comfortable design, stylish features, and long-lasting battery life to create an attractive and stable headset for your listening and talking pleasure. Youll appreciate its great wireless range due to Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity and you can charge it for an hour and a half and get 10 hours of complete battery life.

What we like: Faster charging for 10 hours battery life and sleek design

What we dont like: Difficult to pair with other Bluetooth devices

Standout Features:

I really appreciate the HD1 headset for its beautiful design, long 10 hour battery life, and excellent Bluetooth 4.1 long-range connectivity capabilities. I can leave my phone on the other side of the room and still hear lucent audio coming from my Bluetooth headset without any static to think of. And even at that range, the audio isnt going to cut out while endlessly annoying me and ruining my listening experience.

Even more to the point, I really love the ergonomic design because comfort is something that I always consider when buying a headset of this nature. They use soft sheepskin leather on the neckband, which makes it very comfortable to wear and hardly noticeable. Other devices that incorporate too much plastic are uncomfortable and far too bulky, but this model isnt one of them.

How Much Should You Spend On A Bluetooth Headset

The sweet spot for a mono Bluetooth headset is $99 list, and you can often find those models discounted to $70 or $80 if you shop around. A good stereo headset generally runs $150 to $300. The headsets in this roundup are on the high end of that price range, because we’re focused on the absolute best performing devices for people who rely on their headsets all day.

You can still find a decent headset for under $50, and sometimes you can find a really good one at that price since headsets tend to stay available in retail channels for a long time after they’re discontinued. Cheaper Jabra, Motorola, and Plantronics headsets work fine they just aren’t up to the performance standards set by the more expensive category leaders. Typically you’ll have to buy something a little bit clunkier, with noise cancellation that isn’t up to par with the leaders, but then again, you aren’t paying a premium for it.

Check Price Budget Pick

I am always a bit skeptical around affordable headphone. If you are not careful, you will end up wasting your money on an awful pair that distorts every single tone. After a meticulous search, I can say that the Sony C400 headphones are among the best in this category.

The greatest thing about these headphones is undoubtedly the battery. They offer around 16 hours of continuous playtime, exceeding a lof of pricier headphones. On the downside, they need up to 3 hours to charge, which can be too much for most people.

The build of these headphones is probably my least favorite thing. The neckband is a bit slimmer than it should be. It probably will not break that easily, but it leaves you quite cautious with the way you use the headphones.

The cables are also flimsy and thin. Some customers said they started to tear only after a couple of months. On the bright side, the length of the cables can be easily adjusted by a small sliding ball located over the neckband wings.

Despite the flimsy build, these headphones deliver surprisingly good sound quality. Their lows, mids, and highs are clear enough with little to no distortion. Their bass is not that thumping, though. But you cannot really expect that at their price range.

Best Wireless Earbuds And Bluetooth Headphones For Making Calls

Here are the best wireless headphones and earbuds that are great for making and taking voice calls.

While sound and comfort are arguably the most important factors when buying a pair of headphones, their performance as a headset for making phone calls has become a key feature as we use headphones to communicate on the go — or working from home — in a world where we’re no longer tethered to the office.

I’ve created a list of best headphones for working from home, but this one is a little different. That list includes more “work” or “business” headphones that you’re more likely to use with both a phone and computer and features some enterprise headphones with boom microphones. Some of those are Microsoft Teams-certified and are also designed to work with Unified Communications applications. This list is less business focused and includes only consumer wireless Bluetooth headset that works well for making calls on the go with your cell phone .

So, what makes the best earbuds for phone calls? Well, for starters, the best Bluetooth earbuds or headphones are able to reduce ambient sound even in loud environments, allowing people to hear you clearly when you speak during conference calls. Needless to say, you’ll want to hear people clearly, so sound quality — and often noise isolation — are also important. And finally, comfort is essential along with decent battery life and touch control.

    Best For Apple Lovers

The Unboxing Of The Sony C400 Wireless Behind The Neck In Ear Headphones

Not only are the Beats Fit Pro one of the best workout buds for Apple users, they’re one of the best everyday buds, period. They have squishy ear tips and elegant fins . They have the Apple H1 chip and pair seamlessly with Apple products, but they also have a great app for Android that includes one-touch pairing, customized controls, and a fit test.

The noise-canceling works extremely well, and you can click on a physical button on the buds to pause and let ambient noise in. The sound signature is remarkably sculptured, according to WIRED associate editor Parker Hall, meaning you can enjoy music in all genres, movies mixed in Dolby Atmos, and get great-sounding Zoom calls. Most important, unlike many of our other picks, they come in a signature Beats-style eye-catching purple, . I also wholeheartedly recommend Beats’ previous, and now cheaper, Powerbeats workout buds they work reliably after years of heavy use.

Apple Alternative: If you must have Apple-branded buds, go for the AirPods Pro , not the overpriced third-generation standard AirPods. They are IPX4-rated so they’re sweat-resistant, with great sound quality and powerful noise-canceling tech. They fit well but don’t seal in your ear, so they won’t stay put as well as the Beats Fit Pro.
