Best Bluetooth Headphones For Sleeping

Best On A Budget: Panasonic Rp

Best Bluetooth Sleep Eye Mask Headphones | Sleep Headphones | Bluetooth Sleep Eye Mask Wireless

If youre on a super-strict budget and are just looking for a set of cheap earphones to listen to music while you fall asleep, its hard to go past the Panasonic RP-HS46. They dont have great sound, extra features, or a catchy name, but they do have two other things: flat speakers and a very low price.

The slim design of the speakers makes them at least somewhat appropriate for side sleepers. While youll likely still feel them pressed between your ear and the pillow, theyre more comfortable than most earbuds or headphones. They clip onto each ear to hold them in place, and theres a four-foot headphone cable.

The design means you shouldnt expect much in the way of sound isolation, however, either coming in or going out. These earphones work best in a somewhat quiet environment, and if you sleep with a partner, you may need to keep the volume relatively low to avoid disturbing them.

As a result, these wouldnt be my first pick for anyone looking to block out a lot of outside noise while sleeping. If you just need to listen to a bit of white noise or a really boring podcast to help you drift off, however, these are an easy, low-cost way of doing so.

Best Wireless Earbuds: Apple Airpods Pro

Recommending general-purpose wireless earbuds for sleeping is tricky, as youll need to compromise somewhere. You can have small size, long battery life, strong noise cancelation, or decent comfort levels, but right now, you cant have them all. A dedicated device like the QuietOn 3 is still a better option if sleep is your main concern.

If you want something that can play music and podcasts as well, though, Apple’s Airpods Pro are the best noise-canceling earbuds for sleeping. Thats mainly because theyre smaller and more comfortable to lie on than most of the competition, and the noise cancelation is pretty good.

Theyre obviously also an impressive set of true wireless earbuds in their own right. Im not going to go into a full review of their features here since thats not the purpose of this article, but suffice it to say that theyve been near the top of most best-of lists since they were released.

The biggest downside for sleeping, however, is the battery life: at 4-5 hours, they simply wont last all night. To make matters worse, they announce their low-battery situation with a loud tone that may wake you up just in time to need to charge them again.

If you sleep on your back and dont move around much, being able to comfortably lie on your earbuds for long periods is less of a concern. In that case, itd be worth considering Sony’s WF-1000XM4 instead. Their larger size corresponds with a larger battery, and youll get a full 8 hours of use before they go flat.

Sleep Headphones Wall Of Fame

What headphones and earbuds actually work for sleeping? I have tried quite a few and most are not comfortable enough, so I have only listed the headphones that work for me.

And yes, I have found a favorite when it comes to the criteria that matter most to me: comfort and noise blocking effectiveness.

I have tested three different types of sleep headphones and sleep earbuds:

  • Micro earbuds
  • Flat on-ear headphones

What Types Of Headphones Are The Best For Sleeping

While most earbuds and headphones have a bulky construction, some are small enough to fit comfortably even when you take them to bed. As long as they dont hit the pillow or create too much pressure on your ear lobes, theyre perfectly fine to use during sleep.

However, it does depend on the overall design of which ones are more practical. The latter when choosing headphones is more important to those who are side sleepers.

What Side Do You Sleep On

10 Bluetooth sleeping headphones Reviews & Buyer

In order to find the best pair of headphones for you, youll want to consider your sleeping position. If youre one of the lucky few that can sleep on their back all night, your options are plentiful. Youll likely be satisfied by sleep headphone headbands, earmuffs, and earbuds, so long as they fit snugly inside your ear . You might also be comfortable sleeping in a pair of everyday headphones if they dont protrude too far into your pillow.

If youre a side sleeper, things get a little more complicated. The key to selecting a comfortable pair of headphones is flexibility and diameter. You want to choose a model that wont stick out of your ears, causing uncomfortable pressure when placed between a pillow and your head. Look for a small earbud that can sit flush against your ears without any external tails. If youre interested in trying out a headband, search the specs to find the thinnest drivers. While you may sacrifice booming bass, youll sleep better without feeling any pain.

True face-down stomach sleepers will also encounter some challenges, namely gravity, which may pull over-ear and in-ear headphones down into your covers. We recommend finding a pair of snugly fitting earbuds or a headband that sacrifices onboard controls. While being able to hit play and pause without picking up your phone is helpful, most models place the control panel at the front of the band, which wont feel great resting against your forearm as you try to fall asleep.

How To Get The Best Wireless Bluetooth Sleep Headphones

If you toss and turn a lot or want to use your headphones together with a phone that has no headphone jack, you are perhaps also looking for a wireless solution.

In that case I recommend you go with a separate Bluetooth receiver and clip it to your shirt.

Personally, I could live with wired headphones at night, but I love the convenience of putting my iPad on the night stand and streaming music via Bluetooth.

This way I also dont have to worry about unplugging when I need to go to the bathroom.

At present my favorite solution is to use wired headphones connecting to an Mpow BH203AB Bluetooth receiver which I clip to my shirt. This receiver has outstanding battery life and everything is attached to my body. All headphones in this review work well with this receiver.

Note that the Mpow doesnt come with a clip, but you can easily attach one yourself. For more on this see the last section of this post.

This has completely removed issues with getting entangled in the wires during the night

And I can also use the receiver with other wired headphones during the day in the gym or even on a motorbike.

My preference may change when I find perfectly comfortable sleep headphones with Bluetooth and long battery life at a reasonable price.

These are very similar in design to the Headband above but leans more towards the form of an eyemask.

Since many people who have trouble sleeping also use an eye mask, combining both items into one product is a good idea.

I liked these , the inbuilt audio controls for volume play and pause, which comes in handy in the dark as you dont need to fumble around to control them with your phone.

How To Choose The Best Sleep Headphones For You

Being comfortable in bed is key to falling asleep. So, when choosing the best headphones for sleep, find one that doesn’t get in the way of your comfort.

Better yet, find the kind of headphones that suits the way you sleep. If you’re a side-sleeper, you might prefer a headband that’s not only thin enough, but also has plush padding around the speakers so your ears won’t suffer. If your body temperature tends to rise during sleep, a pair of earbuds might be a better option to help you stay cool. And if you move around a lot, perhaps you should skip the wired options altogether.

Much like regular headphones, the best headphones for sleeping come in wired and wireless options. Wireless ones are, perhaps, the most ideal, as you won’t have to worry about getting tangled in cables whilst you’re off to slumberland. However, if you tend to stay in the same position when sleeping, the 3.5mm audio route might just give you better audio quality.

Battery life

If you do pick a wireless pair of headphones, make sure to check its battery’s longevity as well as charging time. You only technically need 8 hours of battery life to get a full night’s sleep, and many headphones for sleep offer up to 10 hours and take about two to three hours to charge. If you prefer not to charge your headphones every single day, you might want to look for something with up to 20 hours of battery life.

Noise Isolation & Fit

A good and well-fitted sleep mask headphones should be able to stay in place despite twists and turns during sleep.

It is no secret that we unconsciously move around while sleeping. Some move more than others but, either way, a sleep mask should stay on. If not, light could leak in and potentially interrupt your nap.

However, although it is our priority to keep the mask on, it still shouldnt be too tight. A mask thats too tight can impede blood flow to the eyes and cause blurry vision. Also, you wouldnt want to go outside with an obvious contour of the sleep mask on your face, right?

Apart from light leaks, a properly fitted sleep mask would effectively prevent noise from penetrating in as well.

Although, again, you wouldnt want it to be too tight to cause pain and discomfort for your ears. The ear is composed of the smallest bones in the body so having them compressed tightly during an 8-hour nap will cause tension headaches.

Kids Headphones Volume Limited With Ultra

CozyPhones are for those little family members, who like to listen to their favorite tunes or fairy tales before bed. They look super cute and fun and are available in an array of different colors and form factors, some are made in the shape of a unicorn, others are pandas, bears, ninjas, doggies, foxes, and more! Besides, these are cheap, priced less than 20 dollars, and can be a perfect inexpensive Christmas Gift for your child or children of your friends and family members. Finally, a gift idea that wont break your budget!

The headband is soft and washable, and the ultra-thin speakers are limited to 90 dB to protect little ears. This thing is pretty versatile and can be used just as a cute and cool headband or a sleep mask for a worry-free nap.

Theres a flexible and durable 52 inches braided cord and sturdy 3.5 mm stereo plug, compatible with all major devices, operating systems, and accessories.

These headbands are overly popular with consumers, with many people praising how cute and comfy they are. The unsatisfied testers noticed some of the cons like the bands were large and required some clipping behind to perfectly fit. Or that the speakers were not loud enough and offered limited sound volume, which was fine during travel by car, but was a dealbreaker when used on an airplane. Also, the speakers, according to testers, were located back in the head, behind ears, and not on them, so must be a major design flaw or something.

Are Headphones For Sleeping Safe To Use

Listening to music and white noises are proven to improve sleep by calming your nervous system. However, without moderation, it can also affect your health.

Since headphones feed music directly to your ears, there should be some control over the loudness and duration of using them. According to Harvard Health Publishing, prolonged exposure to sounds louder than 85 dB can cause hearing damage. When using headphones, however, at least an hour of exposure to this level is enough to injure your ears. Therefore, when using sleep headphones, it is better to keep your sound level at a lower rate.

Since your playtime duration is likely to go unnoticed when you are asleep, you should set an automatic stop for your headphones. Thankfully, many headphones made for sleeping have this feature already. Alternatively, you can set a sleep timer if you are using streaming apps like Spotify and Apple Music.

Are Headphones Safe For Sleeping

HIGHEVER Sleep Mask with Bluetooth Sleep Headphones – “2021 Best Gift Choice” – Bluetooth 5.0

Although sleeping with headphones can improve sleep quality for some, there are certain health risks associated with using these devices. These risks include:

  • Earwax buildup: Some headphones earbuds in particular form a tight seal over the ear canal that can reduce circulation. This can cause earwax to accumulate around the eardrum excessive buildup can be painful, and necessitate a doctors visit.
  • Otitis externa: Headphones that protrude deeply the ear canal can cause this condition, which occurs when the skin in the ear canal becomes irritated and fluid begins to leak. Listening to music at an excessive volume can also lead to otitis externa.
  • Hearing problems: In addition to otitis externa, listening to music at a high volume can also cause hearing impairment or loss. Most experts agree that listening at a volume higher than 60 decibels for excessive lengths of time can cause hearing damage.
  • Strangulation hazard: Wired headphones pose a risk of wrapping around the listeners throat while they sleep. This can significantly block the airway, causing the individual to asphyxiate.
  • Distraction: Headphones that effectively block outside noise pose a risk to sleepers who may not hear other sounds in their home. This can be dangerous if an emergency situation occurs, such as a fire, home invasion, or medical issue involving a family member or roommate.
