What Kinds Of Subwoofers Are There

Most of the more modern soundbars come with wireless subwoofers. They are very convenient because they can be placed away from the soundbar. Then you also have the subwoofers that connect to the soundbar via wires, which means they do have to be close to the soundbar and you will get that extra clutter. The third type of soundbar with a subwoofer is the built-in subwoofer that you cant even see, but you still get all of the benefits of it.

The Future Of Dolby Atmos

So where else do we want to see Atmos? Virtual reality appears to be a growing area of interest for Dolby. As supported above by the Atmos Height Virtualisation technology, the company is designing tools to deliver Atmos soundtracks in a virtual experience.

More music in Atmos appears to be a priority of, and potential area of growth for, Dolby too.

There’s no doubt the all-encompassing, Atmos- and Vision-supporting Dolby Cinema venture will continue to spread. Dolby Atmos will even be making its in-car debut this year with the Lucid Air electric vehicle as part of a 21-speaker Surreal Sound system. We’ve seen a number of manufacturers announce plans to offer immersive in-car audio experiences over the last couple of years and we’re keen to see if other car manufacturers sign up to support Dolby Atmos in their vehicles.

Perhaps the biggest and most immediate area for expansion is more affordable hardware, though. While AVRs both budget and high-end are almost all on board, we’d like a greater choice of affordable speaker solutions and soundbars please. The first wireless speaker to fully support Dolby Atmos Music was the , but hopefully this is just the first of many.

Other Soundbars To Speculate

Spending more than the SK8s $499/£399/AU$699 asking price can certainly get you handy extra features such as 4K HDMI loopthrough, true up-firing Atmos speakers and at least the option of adding extra rear channel speakers.

On the other hand, its hard to imagine how anyone who buys an SK8 feeling shortchanged by the sound quality and source flexibility it has to offer.

If moneys no object, the Samsung HW-N950 is a beast of a system. It ships with rear speakers that have up-firing drivers as well as front firing drivers, while its main soundbar has side-firing and up-firing speakers. And its subwoofer is brutally, brilliantly aggressive … of course the N950 costs $1,699/£1,499.

If you can live without any Dolby Atmos decoding and want an ultra-tidy sound solution, Samsung has an extremely powerful one-box solution in the shape of the Samsung HW-MS650.

A more direct competitor to the SK8 is the Sony HT-ZF9, which uses a 3.1-channel speaker configuration and proprietary Dolby Atmos processing. It costs significantly more than the LG SK8 at $899/£650, but as well as its extra physical speaker channel, it carries two HDMI inputs and 4K loopthrough.

Creative Stage V: The Best Soundbar And Subwoofer Under 100

Price: £100 |

Value-for-money soundbars dont get much better than the Creative Stage V2. It may not be as cheap as the original Stage 2.1, which is available for £80, but it features two new sound modes, Surround and Dialog, both of which are welcome additions. Surround mode widens the soundstage to increase immersion, while Dialog mode does a top job at enhancing voices on screen. The discrete subwoofer helps deliver rich, impactful bass, and the bar itself articulates mid-range and treble frequencies very capably.

The Stage V2 has connection options aplenty, too. Optical, HDMI ARC and AUX connections are all supported, while a USB-C port allows you to hook the bar up to your PC and use it as a desktop soundbar. Wireless connectivity via Bluetooth is also available for those wanting to stream content from external devices.

If you want a wallet-friendly way of improving your TVs audio, the Creative Stage V2 is the best bang for your buck.

Pansonic Soundslayer: The Best Soundbar For Gaming

Price: £250 |

This compact soundbar from Panasonic weighs just 1.8kg and is a great option for those that enjoy gaming, both on PC and consoles. It has a built-in subwoofer and supports Dolby Atmos, DTX:X and DTS Virtual:X in addition to 4K HDR passthrough.

The SoundSlayer features three bespoke audio profiles, each designed with specific gaming genres in mind. Voice mode is ideal for dialogue-heavy games, FPS mode cranks up gunfire and explosions while enhancing positional audio cues, and RPG mode is optimised for an immersive surround-sound experience while playing games such as Final Fantasy XIV Online. All three modes were jointly created with the sound team behind FFXIV Online, and theres even a special Final Fantasy edition of the soundbar available if youre willing to fork out an extra £50.

Audio quality is impressive for what is a small soundbar, though the bass response isnt as weighty as a similarly priced bar with a separate subwoofer. But the lack of a sub reduces its footprint significantly, making it perfect for slipping neatly under a TV or monitor.

If half of the movie-going experience is sound, when you view films and TV at home you’re probably missing half the action. Why? Well, brace yourselves as there’s no easy way to say this: your TV’s speakers aren’t much to write home about. As flat-panel technology improves and TVs get thinner, real estate for drivers is ever diminishing and your TV’s in-built speakers have an almost impossible task to deliver sound that matches up with the dizzying visuals onscreen. Don’t feel bad though, there is a cost-effective way to hear dialogue more clearly and up the ante with film soundtracks. Just grab yourself a great-value soundbar from some of the excellent brands on offer.

A soundbar is a simple solution to boost your TV’s sonic performance without cluttering your lounge with multiple speakers and a chunky AV amplifier. You just pop it in front of the TV, hook it up and voila, you’re all set!

And the good news just keeps on coming, as there are currently some extra-tasty deals to be snapped up on wallet-friendly TV soundbars, as well as some excellent savings on more premium options if you’re partnering with a bigger flagship TV.

Dolby Atmos On Mobile

Dolby Atmos works on tablets such as the via connected headphones, and on the , though this obviously won’t be on the same level of immersiveness as a soundbar or surround sound system.

Atmos here works through ‘binaural headphone rendering’ and ‘object-based audio. Binaural headphone rendering creates surround sound through headphones via heat-related transfer functions . To explain how this works, Dolby gives an example of a car honking its horn: if it honks to your right, your right ear gets the full blast, while the left ear gets a less intense sound because the sound has to travel around your head. The brain recognises the differences, telling you to look to your right to see if the car is near you.

Dolby has reversed this process to create virtual surround sound from the single speakers in headphones, producing the effect that sound is coming from all around you.

‘Object-based audio’ is the foundation of Dolby Atmos. Each sound in a scene has information explaining where it should be placed in the speaker configuration, and Dolby claims to have married these two technologies together to create a virtual, enveloping surround-sound experience on a mobile platform.

We didn’t find it all that useful in the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, mind you. While it produces a “slightly wider effect”, it “slightly blurs and compresses the sound compared to regular playback. We prefer to keep it off most of the time”.
