The speaker is large, but not as heavy as JBLs boombox. It takes a lot of design cues from JBLs Flip and Charge line-ups, but adds some elegance with a more minimalistic design.

The speaker has an excellent battery life at 20 hours and charges up quite quickly. There is a really nice dock that can be bought separately, that will keep it charged until you need to take it somewhere. Not only does the dock keep it charged, but it does look really nice as well.

Fun Facts About The Human Perception Of Sound

The Top 10 Rugged Bluetooth Speakers for Outdoor Sports

Fact 1: The human ear is a very complex and very sensitive organ. The smallest change in loudness an average ear can perceive is 1dB.

Fact 2: A seemingly small change in loudness/SPL can be perceived as significant by the human ear. For example, a 10dB change is perceived as twice as loud. So, if one speaker can reach the max SPL of 127dB, and the other goes only to 112dB, the difference in perceived loudness between the two is really big .

Fact 3: The difference between dangerous and acceptable loudness is actually very small and subtle. For example, exposure to 90dB SPL for more than 8 hours/day can already cause noise-induced hearing loss. 90dB is the average noise that a lawnmower produces. If the noise level increases by only 10dB , the max allowed exposure time is only 2h/day. Anything longer than that will, in the long run, cause some damage.

If the noise level is 110dB, acceptable exposure time is less than half an hour. Just to put it into perspective for you 70dB is the average SPL of a vacuum cleaner and the noise created by an alarm clock is rated at 80dB. So, even a speaker that plays at 80dB SPL can hardly be considered quiet .

Fact 4: 120dB of noise is, by many authors and scientists, considered the threshold of pain, and any sound louder than 120dB can cause immediate damage. So, 120dB can be considered dangerously loud. Having in mind Fact 2, 120dB noise is 32x louder than a normal speech .

    What Makes A Speaker Loud

The intensity of a given sound is measured in decibels , but there are various ways to drive up the volume of a speaker within the speakers design. By the time a signal has made it to your speaker, the signal has been converted from a digital signal to an analog electrical signal. Afterward, the electrical signal is translated into mechanical energy and then into acoustical energy once the air starts moving. The magic happens when that wiggling air vibrates our eardrums and we hear that as sound!

So how do speakers make more air vibrate? Well, theres a reason you probably assume that the biggest speakers are the loudest. Increasing the size of a speaker is the simplest way to make it louder because a larger speaker can move more air and thus create more volume.

Another way to increase the perceived volume of speakers is by getting a speaker with better frequency response. Frequency response is a measure of a speakers accuracy, it measures how accurate the sound waves the speaker produces are compared to the electrical signal the speaker received. This is why a small Bluetooth speaker sounds better than laptop speakers because it is slightly bigger and has a better frequency response than the speakers on your laptop!

    What Makes A Speaker ‘loud’

First, check out how many decibels a speaker cranks out, or look at the scaled measurement of the intensity of sound. Not unlike an earthquake, the higher up on a scale, the more exponentially powerful the sound is.

Every 10 dB represents a 10-fold increase or doubling in volume. For example, 20dB is 10 times louder than 10 dB, while 30 dB is 100x louder than 10 dB and – with that logic in mind – 1,000x more powerful than 0 dB. For reference, the average concert has an intensity of about 100 dB.

Now lets talk about Wattage because all that sound needs to be backed by sheer power. But how many watts do you really need? Every speaker is set at its own wattage, telling us exactly the strength of its perceived amplification. However, a 100W speaker isnt twice as loud as a 50W speaker, but rather 3dB louder.

The Sonos Move Is Great For Both Indoors And Outdoors

Best Bluetooth Speaker from MOKCAO LIFE 30W Bamboo Bass Speaker

While most Sonos speakers operate over Wi-Fi and are meant to be kept inside the home, the Sonos Move can operate over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and is powered by a rechargeable battery with lasts about 6 hours, 30 minutes on a single charge. This means it can be taken on the go with you, but its large size and hefty weight make it a less-than-ideal travel partner. While its Bluetooth connection works well and gives you the option to stream over SBC or AAC, it wont sound as good as Wi-Fi streaming. If you subscribe to Qobuz, youll enjoy 24-bit audio streaming on Sonos. The Sonos Move is compatible with lots of different music streaming services.
