Best Budget Bluetooth Speakers : Big On Sound Kind On Your Wallet

Best budget Bluetooth speakers Buying Guide: Welcome to What Hi-Fi?’s round-up of the best budget wireless speakers you can buy in 2021.

Bluetooth speakers have always been a great addition to any music lover’s kit bag and a budget option is a must for lazy days at the beach . These days, it’s surprising what even a small outlay can buy you too.

Perhaps dropping a significant sum on something with multi-room capabilities, Roon-ready smarts or a plethora of inbuilt streaming platforms simply isn’t justifiable right now. Some of these solutions will set you back as little as £20-£30 ideal if you just want something cheap and cheerful but don’t want to scrimp on sound quality. Maybe the children could use something durable to listen to while doing homework, or maybe you just want to chuck a podcast on in the kitchen when you’re cooking.

So, aside from something that sounds good for the money, what should you look for when shopping for a budget Bluetooth speaker?

Models here at the more affordable end of the market tend to be rugged and super portable, so look out for a durable design and waterproofing IPX7 and IP67 are good numbers to look out for.

Budget Bluetooth speakers can be small enough to fit in a coat pocket, cheekily designed to fit in your bike’s water cage or big enough to fill a room with serious sound, so it’s imperative that you also check the dimensions before clicking “buy” .

What Is The Loudest Bluetooth Speaker

The loudest Bluetooth speakers are the biggest ones. Sometimes they’re referred to as boom boxes or “party” speakers. Some of those speakers are portable and have built-in rechargeable batteries while the biggest party speakers literally have wheels on them for transport and need to be plugged in with an AC adapter because they require so much power.

We have a list of best wireless boom box speakers if you’re looking for a bigger Bluetooth speaker. It’s also worth noting that Bluetooth speakers from the same company can be daisy-chained together to augment their sound or paired together as a left-right stereo pair. Often, the best way to get bigger sound is to pair two Bluetooth speakers together in a stereo pair.

Without further ado, check out some of our favorite Bluetooth speakers and compare each brand’s features so that you can choose the best Bluetooth speaker for your needs.

Youll Need Power But Its Worth It

Once I adjusted to this requirement, I quickly began to see the benefits of this tradeoff. Having full-time access to power means the Sony SRS-ZR5 can turn on remotely, and it can instantly establish a wireless connection at any time. It also enables the speakers to access streaming services without having to worry about power consumption. I found it incredibly useful to be able to turn on and use this speaker without having to be physically near the device. The plugged in design also enabled Sony to dedicated more internal space to quality speaker components as there wasnt a need to accommodate a rechargeable battery.

Meet Sony Portable Speakers

Sonys portable speakers, including the SRS-XB32, SRS-XB22, and SRS-XB12 can be used indoors and out, providing ample sound for personal listening on the beach, a hike in the forest, or a big backyard party.

How Do I Connect A Bluetooth Speaker With My Tv

Sony GTK

Well, first of all, you need a TV, video streaming device or set-top cable or satellite box that has Bluetooth. You connect a Bluetooth speaker just like you do Bluetooth earbuds — through the Bluetooth settings menu on your TV or those aforementioned devices .

The only issue with connecting a Bluetooth speaker to your TV is that there can be some audio-video syncing issues due to Bluetooth lag. In some cases, where your Bluetooth speaker has an audio input , you can use a wired connection to the speaker via the audio outputs on your TV.

Soundbars tend to use the optical or HDMI connection on your TV to get sound. Many soundbars have a Bluetooth option so you can wirelessly stream music from your phone to the soundbar.

Lithium Ion Batteries Provide Ultimate Flexibility

Ive mentioned it many times in the past, and Ill say it again: Lithium Ion is far and away the gold standard of rechargeable batteries. They hold their charge for months when not in use, there is no muscle memory impeding complete charges, and they provide exponentially more use time per charge than their lesser cousins. The XB20 takes a couple hours to charge, and provides 12 hours of listening time. The XB30 and XB40 takes 4 hours for a full charge, and provides a whopping 24 hours of listening time.

Surround Sound Is Immersive In Stereo

The Sony SRS-ZR5 is sold as an individual speaker, but it provides an option to pair two of them together for 2.0 surround sound.

My previous experience with Bluetooth speakers has been with designs that involve one singular enclosure such as a sound bar. With this approach, sound is usually only delivered through one channel. For a multichannel speaker, the left and right speakers are too close together to fully appreciate the separate signals.

When I paired the two ZR5 speakers together, it delivered an incredible listening experience. The physical separation between the two speakers enabled me to hear distinctly separate sounds coming from the left and the right. With proper stereo sound, it feels like an entirely different listening experience. Vocals and instruments become layered as they come from each direction. This results in the delivery very immersive audio.

You can use two Sony SRS-ZR5 speakers as rear channels for compatible Sony sound systems like the Sony HT-NT5. While this setup may not be the most effective use of these speakers, it is great to have the option to combine all of your speaker components to create a cinematic audio experience.

Sony Music Center App Needs Improvement

The set up process, access to features like stereo pairing, and multi-room audio is managed through the Sony Music Center App. Fortunately, stereo pairing only needs to be completed once and wont require the app again.

Multi-room audio is a relatively new feature that enables you to connect multiple speakers around the home and simultaneously send music to all the speakers at once. Each time that you want to use this feature, the app needs to coordinate all of the speakers together. I found this requirement to be frustrating because each request can take up to 20 seconds to complete and it often returned an error. This inconsistency kept me from using the Multi-room feature. I hope the issue is software related and that Sony is able to release a fix in the near future.

    These Are All Water Resistant

Another major win with this line is the fact that they are all water resistant. That doesnt mean you can drop it in the hot tub and have it work after, but it does mean that it is able to withstand rain, the odd spilled drink, and even a stream of water that has a 6.3 mm diameter, from any direction, at a distance of 3 meters, sustained up to 12.5 liters per minute, for upwards of 3 minutes and remain functional. If that seems oddly specific, its because it is. In what was a bit of a revelation for me, there is actually a standardized model that is used to determine a degree of protection from water. We definitely live in interesting times.

    Sony Xb12 Xb22 & Xb: Sound

Sony XB30 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Black SRSXB30/BLK ...

As far as how they sound, the two larger speakers, the XB22 & XB32 have a similar sound profile. The XB22 sounded a little bit hollow by default when compared to the XB32, which had a slightly bass-heavy default sound. Both speakers sounded warm with clear vocals but you are able to customize the sound to your liking using the Sony Music Center App. Within the app, you can customize the levels of bass, mid and treble in your listening experience. I had an occasional issue with Bluetooth distortion on the XB-22 and occasional connection stuttering with the XB-32 in my testing environment. A quick disconnect and reconnect fixed both rare issues.

The XB12, on the other hand, has a more V-shaped sound. Its good for the size, but obviously cant compete with the two larger devices. With this device, the mid-range gets buried a little by the bass and the treble. The device pumps out a good amount of bass and the treble that cuts through, but the mid-range gets a little lost. The XB12 is not connectable to the Sony Music Centre App.

    Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2

A fantastically affordable Bluetooth speaker with a weighty sound and good battery life.

    Reasons to avoid

Ultimate Ears has really made a splash in the Bluetooth speaker market with a number of colourful, fun-sounding and portable models on its books. This is the small but mightily impressive 2019-release Wonderboom 2 and because of its age, there are deals are out there.

Battery life is 13 hours and a full charge takes just under three. It’s waterproof, sandproof, dustproof and is also designed to float, so it should withstand the most lively of pool parties. Playback is controlled over a Bluetooth connection, but note that there’s no mic for hands-free calling.

Sonically, the Wonderboom 2 is an exciting listen, with impressive bass given its small dimensions. It packs in plenty of detail and there’s a fine sense of attack. It’s easily one of the best sounding Bluetooth speakers you can buy for the money.

Final Thoughts On The Sony Srs

Sony SRS-XB30 Review – Best Bluetooth Speaker??

The Sony SRS-ZR5 is a speaker that provides great sound, especially for its size. The ability to pair two of these speakers together for surround sound, delivers great physical separation and a very immersive listening experience. One downside however, is the Sony Music Center App. It can be unresponsive or very slow if you want to use it for multi-room audio. This inconsistency prevented me from wanting to use this feature altogether. For a more stable multi-room experience, I would suggest waiting for a software update from Sony. You could also check out the proven multi-room speakers from Sonos.

Fortunately, features like Spotify Connect and surround sound work great within the native apps and it wont affect the user experience. If multi-room audio is not a concern and you are planning to use the Sony SRS-ZR5 as a regular speaker or even as a stereo pair, it can provide a great speaker solution for music in the living room or at a desk.

Lights Live Sound & Party Booster

The two larger devices offer a few additional features some of them are useful and others are a fun party trick. Lets start with the useful one: the LIVE SOUND feature. Without it, these speakers will shoot the sound in the direction that they are facing. When activated, the LIVE SOUND feature takes the unidirectional sound and turns it into a three-dimensional sound experience. Its great when the speaker is placed in the middle of a room or outside, for instance.

Less useful are the lights and Party Booster features. Using the Sony Music Center App, you can unlock the full potential of the speaker.

First with the lights. By default, these lights will oscillate in colour and rhythm based on your musical choices. With the app, you can change the manner in which they move. With the XB32, you can even download a separate app, Fiestable, to get even greater control over your lighting colours. Secondly, the Party Booster allows you to strike five zones on the speaker to activate a series of gimmicky sounds . Its fun the first time you discover the feature, but will likely be forgotten relatively quickly.
