What You Should Know About The Best Wireless Headphones

The Monoprice BT-600ANC supports aptX HD, AAC, and wired playback.

What is active noise cancelling and how does it work? You can dive deeper if youre really curious to learn the science behind it, but if you dont feel like dusting off your old textbook and want the TL DR version, here it is.

Tiny microphones built into the headphones pick up whats going on around you and then play the opposite sound wave into your ear along with your music. Because the sound wave thats produced by the headphones is basically the exact opposite of the one thats outside of the headphones, it cancels out. Leaving you with just the sound of your blissful music. See? That wasnt so bad. Science can be cool.

So you think youre ready to understand what makes LDAC or aptX HD good? Get ready, theres a ton of technical jargon and numbers were about to go over, but well try and keep it relatively short. For a full breakdown make sure to check out this great article by Rob Triggs over at our sister site Android Authority.

The AAC codec performance varies greatly depending on what source device is being used.

Even if your phone doesnt currently support it, you should still get headphones that support these codecs anyway. Android 8.0 brings support for these wireless standards to lots of phones in the near future and assuming your headphones last longer than your smartphone does: your headphones will only sound better as the tech in your phone catches up.

No Compromise Wireless Sound

Thanks to high definition aptX® and AAC streaming, not an ounce of fidelity is lost in the wireless transmission of audio. Designed to sound completely neutral, Reference Over-Ear creates audiophile sound without audiophile price. The enhanced precision of Klipschs KBD driver adds clarity and articulation to any song. The the balanced driver moves like a piston, lowering distortion and improving resolution.

Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus

Cambridges Award-winning recipe has been refined to include app support and extra sonic clarity and detail

Reasons to avoid

Cambridges compact, fuss-free and affordable design in its original Melomania 1 true wireless earbuds was a hit with us the first time around in 2019. The addition of a slicker paint-job, app support for EQ customisation and the step-up in sonic detail and refinement without the anticipated price hike only makes us want to heap extra praise upon the new Melomania 1 Plus.

While the original Melomania 1 can now be had for a significant discount, wed still point you towards this updated model. Theres no noise-cancelling onboard, but those who dont need shouldn’t hesitate to add these latest Melomanias to their shortlist. For an engaging, detailed, expansive listen, the Melomania 1 Plus are very much in the running for best at this level.

Panasonic isn’t a brand that immediately springs to mind when you think of cheap wireless earbuds. But perhaps it should be. The RZ-S500W are the company’s first foray into wireless noise-cancelling earbuds and they’re sensational performers for their outlay.

You also get five sizes of ear tips to help with fit. We found this a little hit and miss, so we’d definitely experiment and consider mixing the sizes if it means getting a more secure fit.

The Best Design Goes To The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 is a great headset, even compared to the newer Bose QuietComfort 45. As the next iteration of the ANC line from Bose, it has a brand new design that makes the QC35 II before it seem ancient. The only downside is that you no longer get any folding hinges with the NCH 700, but you can still rotate the ear cups to lay flat and the new metal headband is much more durable.

Wireless Earbuds For Working Out

When looking for wireless earbuds for working out, you need to make sure they fit well so there’s no chance of them slipping out while you’re lifting or running. In some cases, ear fins can help out here but they’re not essential if you find the right snug fit.

Alongside that, a high IPX rating is also useful meaning you can worry less about sweat, rain, and even dipping your head in the pool in some cases. You want a robust pair of wireless earbuds that can keep up with your active lifestyle.

Reasons to avoid

While the active noise cancellation isnt as good as other models, the combination of fit, low profile design, sound quality, and solid battery life still make the Vista 2 some of the best truly wireless earbuds for working out as well as listening at home or in the office.

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700

The Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700, the long-awaited successor to Bose’s QuietComfort 35 II model, may not be a quantum leap forward, but these headphones offer slightly better sound and noise cancellation along with top-notch headset performance for voice calls. They’re a strong all-around audio performer with up to 20 hours of battery life and a more durable design than their predecessor, although the QuietComfort 35 II headphones may be slightly more comfortable.

At launch, they cost $400, but they’ve come down in price. We’ve seen the white version dip as low as $299, while the black and silver versions have hit $340. That said, Sony’s WH-1000XM4, their closest competitor, has also seen nice discounts.

How To Choose The Best Wireless Earbuds

With so many wireless earbuds to pick from, how do you know which are right for you?

Obviously, price is a huge factor. You can get a good pair of wireless earbuds for under £100/$100. But often you do get what you pay for in terms of connectivity, build and noise cancellation.

Next up is form. Do you intend to workout with your earbuds? In which case you’ll need a design that’ll stay put, like the Beats Powerbeats. Or maybe small and minimal is what you’re after, so opt for a pair of discrete true wireless buds, like the Jabra Elite 85t.

But the biggest consideration is whether you should go wireless, which means there isn’t a cable from your phone to your buds. Or true wireless, which is totally wire-free. Let’s take a look at the differences, pros and cons of these types of buds.

What Are The Best Over

In second place is the Bose 700. This has almost all of the same qualities as the WH-1000XM4 and its noise cancellation tech is even better. However, the Bose tends to be more expensive.

Then we have the Apple AirPods Max, a very pricey but feature-rich pair of over-ears that combines good old-fashioned sound quality with some highly advanced EQ and surround sound features.

Grado Prestige Series Sr225x

Grado has upgraded its entry-level line of Prestige Series wired headphones for 2021. Hand-built, the line includes the SR60x, SR80x, SR125x, SR225x and SR325x, and they’re all very good at their various prices. Arguably, however, the $225 SR225x headphones hit the sweet spot if you’re looking for open-back audiophile-grade headphones that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

This updated model features a more durable eight-conductor cable infused with “super annealed” copper for “improved purity of the audio signal,” a more comfortable headband design and updated fourth-generation 44mm drivers that further cut down on distortion and are also more energy-efficient, making them easier to drive. I not only used these headphones with an external headphone amplifier attached to my computer but with an iPhone using a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter. They had plenty of volume when connected directly to the iPhone.

Open-back headphones are supposed to produce more open sound and these do just that, with powerful, controlled bass and natural, warm-sounding mids along with excellent overall clarity. Stepping up to the SRS325x should give you a little bit more bass energy, but you’re not looking at a big jump in sound quality. As with any open-back headphones, these do leak some sound, so people around you can hear what you’re listening to.

Microsoft Surface Headphones 2

The best over-ear headphones for productivity

Size: 8.03 x 7.68 x 1.89 inches | Weight: 10.22 ounces | Battery Life : 20 hours | Bluetooth range: 800 feet | Special features: Adjustable ANC, EQ, Microsoft 365 integration

Microsoft might not be the first name in audio, but the Surface Headphones 2 is a pleasant surprise. It both sounds better and cost less than its predecessor, the original Surface Headphones, and it makes up for middling battery life with some very fast charging: we went from empty to full charge in well under an hour.

The Surface Headphones 2 might also be a good choice if you use Windows a lot. It requires a Microsoft 365 subscription, but theres a unique voice dictation feature that uses the onboard microphones to turn your speech into text in Word or Outlook.

The idea of solar-powered headphones just screams gimmicky, but the Urbanista Los Angeles is far from it. These wireless cans boast Powerfoyle solar cells on the headband that capture solar energy when exposed to light, allowing you to recharge on the fly, as long as it’s exposed to sunlight outside or any other powerful light source. You can even gauge how much power the headphones are gaining or draining when in use through the companion app. Once achieving a full charge, up 80 hours of use is available, which is the longest-rated playtime in the category. Sound is also bass-forward and brings an energetic presence to most songs.

Best For Samsung Phones

Skullcandy Hesh 3 Wireless Bluetooth Over

The Galaxy Buds Pro are Samsung’s premium earbuds. For less than the price of the AirPods Pro , you get better battery life, a wireless charging case, and astonishing microphone quality. But the real reason to buy them is the excellent sound they produce. The Galaxy Buds Pro have an impressive dual-driver array, allowing them to deliver some of the clearest, cleanest bass I’ve heard from wireless earbuds so far. If you care about sound quality as much as you care about features, you really can’t go wrong.

If you don’t want to spend as much but want the best buds to pair with your Samsung phone, try the Galaxy Buds2 . They bring a similar dual-driver array and noise-canceling technology as the Buds Pro, but with an even sleeker and more comfortable fit. You don’t get quite as stellar noise reduction or fidelity, but they’re cheaper, and you still get the streamlined integration with Samsung’s ecosystem, like quick pairing and the ability to wirelessly charge the case off the back of modern Samsung phones.
