The Sennheiser Pxc 550
The Sennheiser PXC 550-II is lightweight and portable with a plastic build. It offers one-touch access to your smart assistant of choice and has a slew of gesture controls that can be difficult to remember. Their firmware can be updated via the Sennheiser app, and you can adjust the EQ with the app.
Earbuds Pick: Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
The 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro earbuds are mostly wonderful flight companions, but we encountered a few bumps of turbulence. First of all, these arent the snazziest-looking earbuds, but we think their effectiveness, comfort, and ease of use will matter more on your next long journey.
As we mentioned above, the sound quality has an increase in intensity in the consonant range. The boosted high frequencies could be fatiguing for listeners who are sensitive to high-pitched sounds. The bump isnt enough to ruin the overall listening experience, however, and in light of the Dual Driver ANC Pros other virtues, we gave it a pass on this drawback.
Another bummer: The mic is located on the collar, so scarves, jackets, and high shirt collars can block or rub it and hinder call quality. Just make sure the mic is not covered when youre making or taking phone calls.
Lastly, the included carrying bag is made of the saddest, cheapest material. But since its really there just to keep your cables nearby and to keep dust off the headphones, we were able to overlook this.
How Does The Noise Cancelling In Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 Work
Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 use both active and passive noise reduction technologies. Active noise cancelling relies on a sophisticated proprietary electronics approach using microphones both inside and outside the earcups to monitor the sounds around you and instantly produces an opposite signal to cancel the noise. Meanwhile, passive noise reduction is achieved by the combination of the acoustic structure and the earcup fit.

Which Are The Right Noise
Whether you are back in the workplace, in a coffee shop, or in a home office, environmental noise can be a hindrance to productivity. While office workers should consider the options suitable for use at a desk, others who are either now adopting fully remote or hybrid working hours may want to focus more on aspects such as portability. You should also consider just how heavy environmental noise is during your typical workday, and whether you’d prefer to block out as much as possible or if you’d prefer hear-through options.
How We Test Noise
We’ve judged the best noise-cancelling headphones on several factors: audio performance, battery life, Bluetooth range, call quality, comfort and fit, and the effectiveness of the noise cancellation. We also weigh special features, such as included apps, and how easy they are to use.
During the testing phase, our reviewers wear each pair of headphones for 2 hours at a time throughout the course of a week, to test comfort over time.
ANC, meanwhile, is tested in both indoor and outdoor environments where ambient sounds are produced at high levels. This includes airplanes, city parks, convenience shops, offices, and public transportation. ANC headphones programmed with transparency modes are also tested thoroughly to determine how well the listener can hear their surroundings.
For sound quality, we listen to many sample tracks that span a number of genres, including hip-hop, rock, jazz, classical and R& B, while evaluating volume, clarity and fullness. And now that more streaming music services are offering high-resolution resolution audio, be sure to read our audio codec FAQ for everything you need to know about FLAC files, MP3s and everything in between.
Once we complete our testing, we rate headphones based on our five-point system . If a product hits nearly every mark, its awarded an Editors’ Choice badge.

How We Chose Candidates
Weve been covering the audio industry for some time and were acutely aware of what the top of the market is. Its not exactly a huge mystery which companies are great at this sort of thing, and which ones arent as much. However, we give everyone their fair shot because were not all-knowing gods of consumer audio or anything, and there are always some surprises out there yes, even for this best noise cancelling headphones list.
Its also important to check our ideas about what people want at the door because were not the ones buying: you are. So from time to time, we take to Twitter to see just how people are actually buying these headphones. Like good journalists, we posted the question, and the results were a little surprising:
Hey commuters! What’s the most important thing to you when buying Active Noise Cancelling headphones?
So with that in mind, we set off to assess each of our candidate products in the order of importance established by the poll.
The Best True Wireless Noise
May be out of stock
*At the time of publishing, the price was $130.
In our experience so far, true wireless earbuds arent the best choice for travelers and commuters who want noise-cancelling headphones. They dont provide the best active noise cancellation, their battery life is shorter, and you cant connect via a cord when necessary. But if your heart is set on true wireless, we think the 1More True Wireless ANC earbuds offer the best combination of performance and features for the money.
Unlike many of the true wireless ANC options available, this 1More pair offers decent noise reduction in the airplane band, averaging 18.2 dB on the high setting and 7.2 dB on the median setting. Thats more than enough to be useful on a plane or subway, and better than what we got from more expensive true wireless designs like the AirPods Pro and the Bose Quiet Comfort Earbuds. Still, its not as effective as what youll get from the 1More Dual Driver ANC Pro earbuds, which average a reduction of 24.5 dB.
The sound quality is a touch on the sibilant side, but folks who prefer an extra boost in the consonant range may not mind that too much. Theres also a good amount of bass, which Lauren wished she could reduce a bit, but its not distractingly boomy or overwhelming to male vocals. The microphones use environmental noise cancelling to ensure that you sound clear to callers, even if there is a little background noise.

Wireless For Music Wired For Gaming
The QuietComfort 35 II Gaming Headset works as both Bluetooth headphones and a wired gaming headset. The Bluetooth connection works with any phone, tablet, or computer that supports the wireless technology, but using the headphones wirelessly limits your voice communication to the built-in microphones rather than the superior boom mic as a result, your voice will sound more distant and less distinct. Youll also have to rely on the headset’s built-in battery for this mode which Bose says can last up to 20 hours between charges , generous for Bluetooth headphones. The Bluetooth connection supports AAC and SBC codecs.
The wired connection uses the boom mic , and can connect to any phone, tablet, computer, or game console with a 3.5mm headphone or headset jack. The headset works completely passively in this mode, so you dont need to worry about keeping it charged. Keeping the headset switched off also means that you wont get noise cancellation. Turning the headset on while connected through the boom mic cable lets you enjoy both the wired audio connection and noise cancellation. Bose says the headsets battery can last up to 40 hours in this wired mode.

Sound quality is not the best There is a crackle
The HonShoo Bluetooth Headset is an excellent wireless device that you can utilize to make wireless phone calls from the workplace. It has been designed to work like a traditional wired headset, but the wireless feature gives it a more complete approach than its older counterpart. The main reason why this headset is so useful comes from how it can be used to make cheap calls without actually having to buy a bunch of accessories.
Most wireless devices are bulkier than their wired counterparts, but the HonShoo Bluetooth Headset features a thin design. What about those annoying phone calls where you are just too busy trying to hold on to your sanity and you are just unable to hear what the other person is saying? Well, with the HonShoo Bluetooth Headset, you will not have to deal with these kinds of sounds or even have to put up with them because of the headset’s great sound quality.

Bang & Olufsen Beoplay Hx
Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay HX is the successor to the company’s H9 series headphones and like those earlier H9 models, the HX carries a list price of $500 . That price point makes it a direct competitor with Apple’s AirPods Max, a heavier headphone at 384.8 grams vs. 285 grams for the HX. I don’t know if the HX is more comfortable than the AirPods Max, but I found the two models pretty equal in the comfort department over longer listening sessions and these do feature the usual swanky B& O lambskin covered memory foam ear pads.
The HX has custom 40mm drivers, Bluetooth 5.1 and support for Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive for high-resolution wireless streaming when you combine an aptX-enabled Android device with certain music streaming services like Qobuz.
Their sound measures up well to the AirPods Max’s sound, with deep, well-defined bass, natural sounding mids and inviting detail in the treble . If you want to push the treble or bass, you can tweak the EQ in the Bang & Olufsen app for iOS and Android and give the headphones a warmer or brighter profile.
Earlier Bang & Olufsen’s models included a soft case , but the HX comes with a hard case. As I said, it’s expensive, but the small improvements over earlier flagship Bang & Olufsen noise-canceling headphones help make the HX’s case as a worthy alternative to the AirPods Max.
What Makes A Good Headset Microphone
Boom mics are your best friends when it comes to headphones for conference calls.
The obvious answer is a headset with a dedicated boom mic like the Plantronics Voyager Focus UC or the V-MODA Crossfade 2 Wireless Codex with its proprietary BoomPro attachment. The main benefit of having an external microphone is that it more effectively mitigates the proximity effect. This way, your voice wont be unevenly amplified across the frequency spectrum. When irregular emphasis does occur, your voice sounds unnatural and could be considered echoed or distant.
If you opt for one of the more versatile headsets without an integrated boom mic, the quality will still be good but there are some things to be aware of: clothing may rub against the microphones and transmit an irritating crinkle sound to the person on the other end of a call. An easy way to fix this is to forgo your style inclinations and un-popping your collar. Its also good practice to be aware of hoods that could do the same thing.

Bose Quietcomfort 35 Ii
We decided to start off with the King Kong of the over-ear headphones. The Bose QuietComfort 35 II is the highest quality over the ear Bluetooth pair of headphones on the market. As a matter of fact, I decided to keep this pair for myself. In my opinion, it gets a 10 out of 10 for durability, sound quality, functionality, longevity, comfort, active noise-canceling, and built-in microphone quality. The only downside is its priced at $349. However, it is well worth every penny and more!
The sound quality is absolutely brilliant. It automatically adjusts the EQ levels depending on what type of music or audio youre listening to. I wouldnt change a thing about the sound, even if I could. Every single instrument and frequency are nicely separated without any cluster. In terms of the active noise canceling and comfort, these headphones are unbeatable.
It has a very reliable built-in microphone for just about any application. You will not have any problems with phone calls regardless of how noisy or windy of an environment youre in.
Built for longevity, the Bose QuietComfort 35 II is one of the most well-designed and durable headphones I have ever used in my life. You can pull it as hard as you can without a peep or squeak. If youre looking for the absolute all-around best pair of Bluetooth headphones with a built-in mic on the market, look no further than the Bose QuietComfort 35 II.

Hear What You Want Not What You Dont
Our proprietary active noise cancelling technology uses microphones both inside and outside the earcups to monitor the sounds around you and instantly produce an opposite signal to cancel them out. With adjustable noise cancelling, you can control how much or how little of the outside world you hear. Plus, Conversation Mode lets you simultaneously adjust noise cancelling and pause your music for a quick chat.
Styles: Headband Neckband Or Earpiece
Headband style headsets are often larger and heavier than the other Bluetooth headset styles. Theyll typically have an ear cuff that goes on the ear with a speaker for listening, and a microphone that protrudes out for speaking. The headband portion goes around the top of the head and then rests against the opposite side. The headband style is often the preferred style for business professionals who work at a desk.
If a headband style isnt comfortable for you, but still you want the stability of a band, you may want to go with a neckband style, which wraps around the back of the neck. Some neckbands have short wires that connect to earbuds that go into the ears, and other neckbands are foldable for easier storage. Many runners and gym-goers prefer the neckband style.
If you want a smaller, less noticeable Bluetooth headset, go with an earpiece or in-ear style headset. These types of headsets are very smalloften around two to three inches in sizeand they may wrap around one ear. Instead of having an ear cuff that rests on the outside of the ear, they usually have an ear cushion you gently place in your ear canal. This type of headset is more versatile, and the style is ideal for gym-goers, business professionals, and regular day-to-day users.
