Build The Am Transmitter

There are a couple of other Instructables that teach how to build the type of transmitter I am using. I include links to them here because I am building the exact same transmitter. If my instructions are not clear, then maybe you will benefit from reading someone else’s way of saying it. Here is a basic transmitter that will get you going. Here is one that takes more time to explain the details of how it all works, but is essentially the exact same transmitter as the previous link. And, if a video explanation helps, here is the same transmitter on YouTube.

You need a 1 Mhz crystal oscillator. The kind we are using for this is called a full can crystal oscillator. This type of crystal has 4 legs on it. The type of crystal with 2 legs is just the crystal and does not have the circuitry to make it oscillate.

You can actually use any oscillator that will put your signal in the AM band, but the 1 Mhz ones are fairly easy to find on eBay.

Using the diagram above, here is how you will build the transmitter and hook the Bluetooth module to it.

What To Look For When Buying A Bluetooth Car Adapter

  • Audio Performance

The most important audio qualities to look for when buying a Bluetooth adapter kit are signal clarity and signal strength.

Signal Clarity – A satisfying audio experience is a balanced mix void of noise and distortion. There must be a clean signal to ensure that the sound coming out of your speakers is high quality.

Signal Strength Strong signals determine maximum stereo amplification. Strong signals are loud and generally have a higher signal-to-noise ratio. This also affects clarity.

  • Connectivity

While some Bluetooth car kits can connect multiple devices, others can only connect with one device at a time. This is not very convenient if you have several passengers that all have a phone, tablet, music, or game devices each wants to use while traveling!

  • Pairing

The best Bluetooth adapter for your car is also one that you do not have to configure each time you want to use your device. Rather, it automatically pairs with your device when you enter the vehicle. Some remember devices they have been previously paired with and they will automatically connect if they are within range. Pairing is also important if you intend to stream favorite stations. You want your Bluetooth to unobtrusively connect.

  • Hands-Free Operation

Hands-free operation is the most important feature of a good Bluetooth adapter. Choose a model that is convenient as well as functional.

One of the best ways to add Bluetooth to your vehicle is by getting an FM transmitter. It comes in handy when your cars radio doesnt have an auxiliary input. You can find a myriad of FM transmitters on the market, but you should ensure that you settle for recent models because they have excellent audio quality and strong signals. These transmitters rely on Bluetooth connectivity therefore, your vehicle wont have wires hanging around, which is an advantage for you. The transmitters could be:

  • USB-powered
  • 12V-powered, or
  • Battery power

Their price ranges also vary accordingly, you should set a budget to get the item that matches up to your spending limits.

If you’re driving an older car, however, you might not have the luxury of streaming over Bluetooth. The upshot is that the price of Bluetooth technology has come down and adding it to any car is affordable and painless.

Connect Spotify To Car Stereo With Aux

Some old-fashioned cars may not support Bluetooth pairing. So, in this case, you can turn to the other method to stream Spotify songs in your car by plugging the device into an Aux-In port via a USB cable. Upgrade To An Aftermarket Stereo Unit

We’ve only covered factory options and simple upgrades here. If you have an older car without built-in USB, Bluetooth, or auxiliary options, and don’t want to use an FM transmitter or cassette adapter, you can replace your entire stereo unit. This will let you use modern options like USB and Bluetooth connections√Ęsome even include Android Auto and CarPlay support.

Doing the replacement is a moderately intensive task, not to mention more expensive than anything above. So we don’t recommend it unless you have some experience with that kind of work, and really don’t want to use any of the above options.

Parrot is a leader in Bluetooth technology. Let’s start with the basics, the Parrot Minikit Slim. This is a simple portable speakerphone kit. It is self-contained, so you can carry it just about anyplace. Now, it also accesses the phone list inside your mobile phone and it has voice recognition, which means that you can just say the name that you want to dial and it happens. The main thing to remember right now is that these are both fully integrated car kits. They have a brain that wires directly into your car stereo. The nice thing about hard-wiring is that it gives this system much more functionality than just the portable device that basically just handles calls. It also has this dual mic array with built-in noise reduction so your callers can hear you much more clearly.

    Auxiliary Cord And Ports

If you are looking for a more reliable means to play music from phone to car, then this is a great option for you. This method is best for cars that have an auxiliary port but lacks Bluetooth functionality.

To play music using this method, link up the adapter first to your phone via Bluetooth. You wont need to connect a wire to the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack on your phone.

Many contemporary builds of cars come with a 3.5mm auxiliary jack. This can either be structured into the stereo unit or beneath it. Doing this helps you to connect the cable from your phones headphone port straight into your stereo. Once connected, you can start playing any music you like from your phone.

Auxiliary audio produces a better sound quality as compared to cassette and FM transmitters. However, it only works with phones that have a 3.5-millimeter jack. If your phone and car come with a stereo jack, then it will be much easier for you to play music from phone to car. It equally works for recent models of phones that lack a headphone jack.

Get A Cheap Bluetooth Car Kit

If you want to add Bluetooth capabilities to your car on the cheap, then getting a Bluetooth car kit is the best option. Im a really big fan of Kinivos Bluetooth car kit , which gets power from your cars cigarette lighter and connects to your stereo via the auxiliary jack.

The Kinivo has the ability to control music played from your phone, and you can control playback using the round control unit instead of your phone. The device also acts as a speakerphone during calls, thanks to a built-in microphone and using your cars speakers as the speakerphone.

If your cars stereo doesnt have an auxiliary jack, youre not completely out of luck. If you dont mind digging into your dashboard a bit, its possible that there are empty RCA plugs on the back of the stereo that you can plug an auxiliary cable to. You can also use an FM transmitter like this one from iClever , which you can connect your phone to over Bluetooth and then have your music beamed to your cars stereo over FM. The quality wont be the best, but its a decent option that I like using.

    Adding An Extra Antenna

The dongle already have a built in antenna, and it can be enough when it is on the original case made 100% of plastic. But being tucked behind a multi-layer copper board and also sandwiched in front of the metallic body of the main stereo, the antenna will not be very efficient for sure.

To calculate the correct length of the antenna, need to know the wavelength of the desired frequency, witch in this case is 2.4GHz for bluetooth. = v/f is the wavelength, v is the speed, and f is frequency. v is C = speed of light. For 2.4Ghz we get = 93.75 mm

I built a 1/4 wavelength monopole antenna is very simple with just a coax cable.

A third option is to get a car adapter. This adapter will be connected to the CD-changer output on the back of the of the original head unit and will then trick the head unit that its a CD-changer while being something else. For this solution to work, you will need to know if you have a CD-changer output on the back of the head unit, Id recommend checking the manual for your car.

Yatour Bluetooth Car Adapter. Used this technique in my old Volvo S60 without trouble.

There are many different models of adapters, all with different functions. Some of these adapters have only AUX and USB while others will also support SD-Cards and Bluetooth. To give you an example of an adapter, you can check this Yatour Bluetooth Car AdapterYatour Bluetooth Car Adapter. This specific one is for Honda but you can find many others models specific for your car. This is something that is really important since there is no standard for CD-changer outputs so all connections will look different, make sure you get one for your specific car.

This is the best solution to connect the phone to your car, if you were thinking about getting an aux cord for a car without aux port.
