What About The Connection Strength

JBL Flip 4 REVIEW! Best Bluetooth Speaker?

Lets circle back to that JBL Connect+ plus button for a second because this is one of my biggest complaints with this speaker. If you remember the Flip 3 also had a JBL Connect button, but this one is Connect+ and that extra plus sign makes a huge difference. While the old one could only connect two JBL speakers together, this new Connect+ button can connect up to 100. Pretty great, until you realize that you cant connect to any previous speaker that doesnt have Connect+.

So if you have another speaker and were hoping to connect the Flip 4 to it youre out of luck. This is a real bummer because the Flip series isnt so expensive that its impossible to imagine someone buying one every time a new one comes out, and now they cant even connect them together.

The JBL Flip 4 has its playback buttons slightly raised above the fabric.

Okay rant over. Besides that, Ive had no issues with the connection aspect of this speaker. The signal stayed strong regardless of where I was in the house, which practically means about 50 feet with a few walls in the way. If youre outdoors Im sure you can push it a bit more as well, as I got well past 50 feet when I took it to the beach though, to be fair, I didnt have a measuring tape to get an exact distance. The playback controls also work very well and the buttons are nice and clicky so youre not left wondering whether youve actually pressed it or not.

Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Battery Life

The Flip 5 has a larger capacity battery than the Flip 4 so you might expect it to have a bit more stamina. Not so, both these speakers provide 12 hours playback.

Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover why: the Flip 5 outputs more power .

What’s more, the Flip 5 has a fast-charge USB-C port, meaning its battery will go from flat to full in just 2.5 hours. The Flip 4 takes around 3.5 hours to juice up.

In other words, when it comes to battery life the Flip 5 has the edge.

Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Verdict

So, which is the best Bluetooth speaker? If you’re prepared to forego the aux input, built-in microphone and stereo sound, the JBL Flip 5 delivers a serious sonic upgrade. It may be low on bells and whistles but it has the sonic chops to put many a rival in the shade. Plus, it floats, making it the best Bluetooth speaker for those who plan to take to the high seas.

This is far from a clear-cut choice, though. The JBL Flip 4 is arguably the more versatile travel buddy. It’s lighter, doubles as a speakerphone and has a handy aux in.

It’s also cheaper and you might even score a discount in the Black Friday sales. And if you already own one of JBL’s Connect or Connect+ speakers, it’s the obvious choice in terms of backwards compatibility.

So while the Flip 4 might not be the best Bluetooth speaker when it comes to pure sound quality, it’s still a fantastic buy for the money.

Compared To Other Speakers

JBL Flip 4 Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

The JBL Flip 4 is a small portable Bluetooth speaker with a removable carrying strap to help transport it. Unlike the JBL Flip 5, this small speaker supports voice assistants through your smartphone and can play stereo content without downmixing it to mono. It has a balanced sound profile out-of-the-box overall, though it struggles to produce a thumpy low-bass. It also comes with a JBL Connect+ feature you can use to connect it to multiple other JBL Connect+ speakers, like the JBL Charge 4. However, you can’t connect it to PartyBoost-compatible JBL speakers like the JBL Flip 5 or the JBL Charge 5. Like most JBL speakers we’ve tested, it also lacks sound customization features like a graphic EQ to adjust its sound to your liking.

But Wait What About The Newer Jbl Flip 5

If youre looking at the JBL Flip 4 and still wondering if you should instead just get the newer JBL Flip 5, then there are just a few things that you should know for. The biggest difference is going to be sound quality. While the Flip 4 doesnt sound bad by any means, its clearly designed with a priority on toughness. The newer JBL Flip 5 is also tough but packs larger 44mm drivers instead of the 40mm ones found on the Flip 4. This means you can expect a subtly better low end when listening to music and this is exactly what we found in our full review of the speaker.

Overall, the design is similar to the previous Flip 4.

Because of this, the JBL Flip 5 is also ever so slightly larger than the Flip 4, but JBL made use of that size by packing a larger battery inside . While you might think that this will improve battery life drastically, it actually remains the same at about 12 hours of constant playback which should be fine for most people anyway. The Flip 5 also has USB-C charging and quick charging so you can charge the speaker with the same cable that charges your Android phone.

Its still small enough to fit in your bag and comes with a string, though Id recommend swapping it out for some paracord.

Should You Buy The Jbl Flip 4 In 2021

The Flip 4s $80 price tag makes this an absolute steal, even in 2021. In fact, we still consider the JBL Flip 4 the best-all around Bluetooth speaker for under $100. The Flip 4 sounds good, is light enough to be packed into a bag easily, and is durable enough to handle your next adventure.

For those still inclined to buy a speaker from the Flip product line, the updated JBL Flip 5 is definitely worth considering. If youre just not ready to commit to something this expensive, give the JBL Clip 3 a try: Its not as good, but then again, its also much cheaper.

Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Design And Build

if you’re planning a day at the pool or a trip to the beach, you can party on whatever the weather since both of these speakers are rated IPX7. That means you should be able to submerge them in water at a depth of 1m for up to 30 minutes. It also means they’re dust-proof and can withstand the odd knock or drop.

But while both models are rugged enough to survive a weekend in the wild, only the Flip 5 actually floats in water, making it the better option for pool parties and boat trips.

Both score highly on the portability scale but if you like to travel light, it’s worth nothing that Flip 4 is marginally smaller in size and also a bit lighter . Still, both speakers are easy enough to sling in a backpack or handbag without any fuss.

More conscious of style? The Flip 5 could be the best Bluetooth speaker for you it comes in a choice of 11 bright colours whereas the Flip 4 comes in six. Fun fact: US customers can personalise their Flip 5 with text, stickers and images using JBL’s Design Your Own customisation feature.

**Winner** Draw the Flip 4 is lighter but the Flip 5 floats.

How Does The Jbl Flip 4 Sound

JBL Flip 4 review: A great, waterproof Bluetooth speaker ...

The Flip 4 doesnt have a big, booming sound but its still good considering its size and price.

If you were looking for the Flip 4 to be a huge improvement in terms of sound quality over the previous model, Im sorry to disappoint. The Flip 4 sounds very similar to the previous model. Now that isnt a knock against the Flip 4 in any way because I really liked the sound of the Flip 3. There are only a few subtle differences here as far as I can tell, one of them being in the highs.

On the Flip 3, I found a slight distortion when the speaker was maxed out but that doesnt seem to be an issue on this new model. The finger slides that used to sound a little harsh in Cinder And Smoke by Iron & Wine is now much more controlled. You can still enjoy it without it bothering your ears which is a plus.

For such a compact speaker the JBL Flip 4 gets nice and loud, and has a consumer-friendly sound.

Not much has changed in the mids, with vocals still coming through loud and clear. Background instruments do get pushed off the side a bit but not enough to be an issue. The guitar and percussion in Life is Wonderful by Jason Mraz backs up the vocals perfectly throughout the track.

Hows The Build And Design Of The Jbl Flip 4

At first glance, there isnt much about the Flip 4 that sets it apart from the previous Flip 3, and thats because aside from a few minor design changes like the phone button being turned into a more fitting triangle for pause or play, there really isnt too much difference between them. The Flip 4 is still rocking the iconic cylindrical shape with exposed passive bass radiators on either end to match the rest of the JBL line-up. That said there is one key difference that makes this a worthy upgrade to the previous model waterproofing.

The JBL Flip 4 comes in an IPX7 waterproof fabric covering.

The fabric that wraps around the speaker might look fairly similar to the previous model, but its actually completely waterproof now. Its IPX7 waterproof to be exact, which along with being able to be submerged for 30 minutes in up to a meter of water, also means thats sealed against dust, dirt, and sand. So taking this to the beach was no problem.

I was able to toss it around in the sand and in the water and then just wipe it off, throw it in my bag, and keep on moving. Its probably not a huge deal for you if you have a Flip 3 and havent ever dropped it in water , but its good knowing that whether you drop it in the pool or in the ocean you wont have to replace the speaker.

The JBL Flip 3 is small enough to easily toss in your bag making it a great grab-and-go option.

Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Sound Quality

The Flip 5 might only have a single 44mm driver, but it has a better frequency response than the Flip 4 and outputs an extra 4W. The result? A louder, clearer, more agile sound that’s packed with taut, pounding bass and plenty of mid-range sparkle. Not even the Award-winning Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 2 can match the Flip 5’s openness and acoustics, although the Wonderboom is a tad cheaper.

The Flip 4 might have two drivers to the Flip 5’s one, but it doesn’t offer quite the same degree of sophistication as the Flip 5.

The good news is that the Flip 4 still sounds confident and agile. It serves up plenty of detail too, and the presentation is surprisingly spacious given its size. The bad news? It just lacks the dynamism and punch of its pricier sibling.

If your budget stretches and sound is a top priority, go for the Flip 5. It delivers a remarkably energetic performance that’s hard to beat at this level.
