JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker Review

The JBL Flip 5 is a Bluetooth speaker that comes in a variety of color schemes to better suit your style. It feels well-built and has an IPX7 rating for water resistance, although we don’t currently test for this. Like most small speakers such as the JBL Xtreme 3, it lacks low-bass and struggles to get loud. Even though it has a companion app, it doesn’t offer an EQ or other sound enhancement features to help tweak its sound. Check out our recommendations for the best Bluetooth speakers and the best cheap speakers.

Features Bluetooth Speaker Jbl Flip 5 Grey

  • Bigger than previous models. In addition, it is very resistant and pleasant to the touch.
  • Dual connectivity, as you can connect up to two phones at once.
  • High-quality sound that will allow you to enjoy all your music everywhere.
  • A very long 12-hour battery life, depending on the volume. Thanks to its USB C-type connection, you will be able to charge it in no time.

Jbl Flip 5 Review: Performance

The Flip 5 has overall very good sound, with impressive bass for a speaker its size. Compared to the Flip 4, the Flip 5 has more bass and spreads the sound slightly wider. The Boom 3 delivers a bigger sound overall, however.

Fiona Apples vocals were clear and full above the clanging instruments and rhythms on Shameika, and Taylor Swifts voice was warm and easy to hear on the last great american dynasty. The snare and cymbals on Sufjan StevensVideo Game snapped crisply. The bass on Jason Isbells Whatve I Done to Help was deep, while the strummed acoustic guitars sounded sharp but not too bright.

The Flip 5 gets plenty loud, measuring about 96 decibels at max volume louder than the Flip 4. But it got pretty distorted at that level the sound was better around 85 decibels.

Differences Between Sizes And Variants

The JBL Flip 5 comes in several color variants: ‘Black’, ‘Red’, ‘White’, ‘Teal’, ‘Blue’, ‘Gray’, ‘Green’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Pink’, ‘Sand’, ‘Yellow’, and ‘Camo’ , and ‘Black Camo’. We tested the Black Camo variant, and you can see its label here. You can also customize the look of this speaker with your own design through the manufacturer’s website. We expect these color variants to perform similarly to our model. However, JBL also makes an ‘Eco Edition’ of this speaker, which is advertised as being made from recycled plastic. This variant comes in two colors: ‘Forest Green’ and ‘Ocean Blue’. Due to their unique build, we don’t know if these two variants perform similarly to our model.

If you come across another variant, let us know in the discussions, and we’ll update our review.

What Does The Jbl Flip 5 Sound Like

JBL Flip 5

Those who are familiar with JBL know to expect excellent sound quality. You pay that little bit more than other Bluetooth speakers, but you get fantastic sound.

The Flip 5 features just one 20W speaker driver with passive bass radiators at either end. This is an extra 4 watts of power compared to the Flip 4s 16W.

The low end is slightly deeper and more punchy than most portable Bluetooth speakers of a similar size. This includes other premium brands like Song, LG, Beats, and more. The Flip 5 has a tight low-end sound which is cleaner and more refined than the competition.

The mid-range and highs are forward in the mix making vocals and instrumentation standout. This is not only great for music, but also for those who use a Bluetooth speaker for podcasts or radio. The intelligibility of the Flip 5 is far superior to any speaker of a similar size.

Jbl Flip 5 Review: Wireless And Setup

The Flip 5 paired easily with my phone and kept a strong signal at about 75 feet indoors. It uses Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the latest standard, 5.0, but that didnt affect performance.

The JBL Portable app lets you update the firmware and manage PartyBoost, in which you can link another JBL speaker and either mirror the sound or use each speaker in a left/right stereo pair. You can also change the play/pause button to activate Siri instead there is no voice assistant integrated into the speaker itself.

The app does little else. Theres no EQ or sound modes, or other features that the Ultimate Ears app offers.

Streamlined For Better And Worse

I think the Flip 5 is priced very fairly, but its also true that for what youre paying, its missing some features you might find yourself wanting. Youre not getting a 3.5mm input for auxiliary playback, nor can it operate as a speakerphone , or juice up your smartphone like its sibling, the Charge 5. The only real extra here is PartyBoost, a setting that allows you to link up multiple JBL speakers.

You can also interact with the Flip 5 using the JBL Portable app, but truth be told, theres a limit to its usefulness. I really only used the app to update the Flip 5s software, which took a long time .

You can also use the app to disable the power on/power off sound and check your battery level with more accuracy than the on-device indicator, but I doubt most folks will even bother installing it, frankly.

Jbl Flip 5 Vs Jbl Charge : The Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers Go Head To Head

Which JBL Bluetooth speaker is best for you?

JBL makes some of the best Bluetooth speakers on the planet, and the Flip 5 and Charge 5 are no exceptions and that makes choosing between them very difficult indeed.

The JBL Flip 5 is one of the brands most simple waterproof speakers, eschewing some of the more complex features such as multi-room audio or built-in voice assistants that youll see from the likes of the Sonos Roam and the Bose Portable Home Speaker 500.

Its a similar story with the JBL Charge 5, although it has a larger footprint, can charge your phone on the move, and uses a more modern Bluetooth version than the Flip 5. Its more expensive, too.

So, should you save some cash and go for the JBL Flip 5? Or splurge on the more powerful JBL Charge 5? Weve tested both portable speakers extensively to help you make the right choice.

Jbl Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker Gets Bigger Sound Better Battery Life Usb

The fifth generation of JBL’s popular portable Bluetooth speaker offers some performance improvements as well as USB-C charging.

The new JBL Flip 5 in front of the Flip 4. It’s really only a little bigger than its predecessor.

Lay the JBL Flip 5 next to last year’s Flip 4 like I did at this year’s CES in Las Vegas and you’ll notice that the Flip 5 looks pretty similar but is slightly bigger than its predecessor. That increased size has allowed JBL’s engineers to equip the Flip 5 with a larger battery and more power so that it delivers a little bigger sound. It also now has USB-C charging for quicker battery charging.

Like its predecessor, the JBL Flip 5 is fully waterproof, has a buillt-in microphone for speakerphone calls and comes in multiple color options. It’ll ship this spring for $100 and should gradually come down in price over the course of the year.

I’ll have a full review shortly before it hits stores.

JBL Flip 5 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker JBLFLIP5BLKAM B& H ...

The JBL Flip 5 launched back in August 2019 for $119.95 / £119.99 / AU$149.95 as the successor to the Flip 4. However, now that its a little older, its possible to pick up the Flip 5 at a discount, with the model selling in the region of $100 / £90 / AU$130 these days.

The JBL Charge 5 is more recent, having launched in 2021 for $179 / £159 / AU$229 thats relatively pricey for a Bluetooth speaker, and the same price as our favorite model, the Sonos Roam.

In spite of its youth, weve already seen some JBL Charge 5 deals, with prices dropping to around £150 / AU$200. Unfortunately, we havent seen similar discounts in the US just yet.

Both portable speakers are likely to be discounted over Black Friday 2021, when Bluetooth speaker deals are usually easy to find.

Jbl Flip 5 Review: Verdict

Since its first version, the Flip has been one of the best portable Bluetooth speakers. The Flip 5 does just enough to keep it among the leaders. It combines an easy-to-carry design with better-than-average bass. This version costs a bit more than the Flip 4, but it is still usually cheaper than the Boom 3.

If you have a Flip 4, you probably dont need to upgrade the biggest difference is the number of colors you can choose from and USB-C charging. If youre debating between the Flip 5 and the Boom 3, the choice comes down to portability versus sound: the Flip 5 is a little more portable, while the Boom 3 sounds a little better overall. Youll be happy either way.

Great Autonomy And Connectivity

This new JBL loudspeaker has a long battery life, which can last up to 12 hours, depending on the volume at which we listen to the music. Normally, the battery will not last less than 6 hours at maximum volume, more than enough time for you to have an impressive party. But if you need to charge it, there’s a quick charge option that will have it ready in 2.5 hours.

If you want to know how much battery you have left, this new speaker has a LED status light that will let you know at a glance. In addition, it has the latest version of bluetooth. Enjoy your favourite music thanks to the new Bluetooth Speaker JBL Flip 5.

The JBL’s MSRP is currently $119, and costs as much if you buy direct from JBL. There’s an impressively wide array of colors to choose from, and if you stretch to $149, you can even design your own with custom patterns and text.

Alternatively, has the plain black model for $94. That’s a big saving if you’re not so fussed about aesthetics.

    A Rainbow Of Design Options

This is a minor pro, but the sheer range of color options available for the Flip 5 line is definitely a plus. There are over 10 different default color schemesour review sample was unfortunately a kinda drab Greymaking it easy to find a hue for you.

You can get real weird with your speaker design if you really want to.

If youre really amped about the look of your Flip 5, you can also pay an extra $30 to design your own. Choose a base design from amongst 20 solid colors, 13 patterns, and nine prints, or upload your own image or text. The degree of customization allows for serious variation, but whether its worth an additional $30 is up to you.

The new Bluetooth Speaker JBL Flip 5 Grey is an evolution of one of JBL’s best speakers, the JBL Flip 4. Just as beautiful, this model is bigger but with the same quality. It has an elegant finish and, thanks to its cylinder format, you can carry it easily. It also has the capacity to connect two phones at the same time, so you can choose the best songs at all times.

Another enhancement with respect to previous models is in its audio quality, since this new model counts on a sound of great quality, possessing better trebles and with a more direct and powerful sound. It will help you in your best parties!

JBL Flip 5 Blue Portable Bluetooth Speaker 50036359276

Youd have a hard time picking out a Flip 5 among a lineup of Flip 4s they are very similar looking. The 7.1 x 2.9 x 2.7-inch Flip 5 is marginally bigger than the 6.9 x 2.75 x 2.7-inch Flip 4 and slightly smaller than the 7.2 x 2.8-inch Ultimate Ears Boom 3. Its also lighter than the Boom 3, with the Flip 5 weighing in at 1.2 pounds.

If you want your speaker color to reflect your personality, The Flip 5 has you covered. It comes in 12 color options, and you can design your own .

The Flip 5 has minimal controls on the device: buttons for play/pause, volume and PartyBoost to link to another JBL speaker, along with a power button, Bluetooth pairing and USB-C port for charging. An LED strip shows the battery level.

The Flip 5 loses the auxiliary input that had been in previous Flip models, so you can only connect wirelessly.

    Battery Life And Connectivity

The JBL Flip 5 offers 12 hours of playback, with a full charge taking about two-and-a-half hours. Meanwhile, the Charge 5 comes with an impressive 20-hour battery life if youre playing music at 50% volume. Push those volume levels up, and you can expect the battery life to drop. Both speakers are charged via USB-C.

Alongside Bluetooth connectivity, both speakers come with JBLs PartyBoost feature via the JBL Connect app. This allows you to pair the units with another JBL speaker in stereo, or with up to 100 yes, you read that correctly speakers in mono for a wall of sound.

Weirdly, the JBL Flip 5 comes with Bluetooth 4.2, compared to the Charge 5s Bluetooth 5.2. Its not the end of the world, but it does mean missing out on faster data speeds and a staggering wireless range of 780ft / 240m .

Neither speaker has a 3.5mm aux input, so you wont be able to hook them up to other audio devices, such as a turntable.

The Charge 5 comes with another trick up its sleeve: a USB-A port that lets you use the speaker to charge your phone as you listen to music pretty handy if youre using the Charge 5 in the great outdoors.
