How Much Is The Jbl Flip 5 Waterproof Portable Bluetooth Speaker

JBL Flip 5 waterproof portable Bluetooth speaker UNBOXING, REVIEW and SOUND TEST

The successor of the JBL FLIP 4, the JBL FLIP 5, was launched in August 2019 at $119.95. It is a bass-laden Bluetooth speaker with punchy sounds and a rugged design. It is a direct competitor with the JBL Charge 4 and comes in a wide variety of colours such as Forest Green, Fiesta Red, Grey Stone, Ocean Blue, River Teal, Desert Sand, Steel White, Dusty Pink, Mustard Yellow, Cameo or Squad and Midnight Black.

Software And Extra Features: Some Cool Little Extras

At first glance, the Flip 5 looks and feels pretty standard, and thats because the portable Bluetooth speaker form factor is really meant as a standalone device. But thanks to brands like Sonos, consumers have more of a network expectation, so JBL has chosen to include a few extras here that help to fill out the offering.

First, what JBL is calling Party Boost, is a function that lets you play the same source audio across a few different compatible JBL speakers, using one as the main source device. You can even pair up to 100 different JBL speakers , which is sort of insane when you think about it. Perhaps the more useful function for this feature is to pair just one other Flip 5 and set them as a stereo pair to give you a better sonic image.

You achieve both of these functions easily using the JBL Connect app, and its this app that helps you to monitor your battery life, update the firmware, and turn off the audio feedback sounds, which are the pings that let you know what mode the device is in. The functions arent nearly as robust as on other Connect-compatible speakers , but there is something nice about having control of your device via an app, rather than limited on-board buttons.

Yesif You Just Want A Bluetooth Speaker That Works

The Flip 5 does more than just get the job done: its intelligently designed, sounds terrific, and is exceedingly easy to use. While there are a ton of decent Bluetooth speakers available for less cash if you want stellar design and sound quality, the Flip 5 is worth the investment.

Of course, if you want even more utility, there are other options to consider. With only 12 hours of battery life, the Flip 5s playback time is good-not-great. You can get the JBL Charge 5 for $60 more, which will not only net you 20 hours of battery life, but also comes equipped with a pass-thru charging function that will allow you to charge your phone or tablet off of the speaker itself.

Additionally, for $50 more you could grab the Sonos Roam and considerably increase your feature utility. The Roam offers Wi-Fi playback for better sound quality, it can link up with other Sonos speakers in a group, it can be controlled via voice commands, and even supports wireless charging. Youre also getting AirPlay 2, for increased iOS utility. Just keep in mind that the Roam has even less total battery life than the Flip 5, clocking in around 10 hours only.

However, power users and technophiles aside, the Flip 5 has exactly the rich sound quality and feature set that the average Joe is looking for. If you want a well-priced Bluetooth speaker that doesnt just meet but exceeds expectations, this is the one we recommend.

Jbl Flip 5 Review: Price And Availability

The JBL’s MSRP is currently $119, and costs as much if you buy direct from JBL. There’s an impressively wide array of colors to choose from, and if you stretch to $149, you can even design your own with custom patterns and text.

Alternatively, has the plain black model for $94. That’s a big saving if you’re not so fussed about aesthetics.

    Jbl Flip 5 Review: Performance

JBL Flip 5 Portable Waterproof Bluetooth Speakers

The Flip 5 has overall very good sound, with impressive bass for a speaker its size. Compared to the Flip 4, the Flip 5 has more bass and spreads the sound slightly wider. The Boom 3 delivers a bigger sound overall, however.

Fiona Apples vocals were clear and full above the clanging instruments and rhythms on Shameika, and Taylor Swifts voice was warm and easy to hear on the last great american dynasty. The snare and cymbals on Sufjan StevensVideo Game snapped crisply. The bass on Jason Isbells Whatve I Done to Help was deep, while the strummed acoustic guitars sounded sharp but not too bright.

The Flip 5 gets plenty loud, measuring about 96 decibels at max volume louder than the Flip 4. But it got pretty distorted at that level the sound was better around 85 decibels.

Overall Take As Compared To The Competition

The Flip 5 is a solidly decent Bluetooth speaker for the price, and a perfectly viable choice. Its on the boomy/bassy side as most JBL speakers tend to be. The sound staging is particularly nice and wide, though the listening sweet spot is in front and somewhat narrow. If you want 360 degree omnidirectional sound there are better competing choices that accomplish that.

    Pairing The Jbl Flip 5

When we tried pairing the Flip 5, we noticed that it hasnt changed from the earlier speaker versions. It connected smoothly and seamlessly, and we didnt have any issues with the process.

What you need to do first is to press the Bluetooth button behind the speaker. Youll find it next to the Flip 5s power button. When it starts blinking and making beeping sounds, the speaker has successfully entered pairing mode.

Then, open settings on your device and click on Bluetooth. From here, youll see JBL Flip 5 in the devices area. Just press the icon to get paired, and youre all set.

Jbl Flip 5 Vs Ultimate Ears Blast

In looks and sound profile, Ultimate Ears speakers tend to feel closest to the JBL line out of any of its competitors. The Blast is their mid-sized model with a battery that lasts 12 hours and has a sound handling that is loud and full. It isnt quite as loud as the Flip 5 and it doesnt look quite as good. But with IP67 water and dust resistance as well as Wi-Fi options, it could be more flexible. The price does tend to hover around $50 more, however.

A great option for those who need it

If youre going to have lots of pool parties and dont want to set up a permanent system in your pool area, then the JBL Flip 5 will pay for itself in volume, durability, and reliability. But, if this is just a supplemental device youll want just in case you need it on occasion, you can get better value elsewhere. Theres no denying though that this speaker sounds and looks incredible though.

    Customize The Jbl Flip 5

JBL Flip 5 Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Music is a mood as much as anything, and you can permanently set the vibe on your JBL Flip 5 by purchasing a customized version on the JBL website. Add colors, text, and/or pre-selected graphics such as a pink cupcake, palm tree, or rainbow. But the real fun comes in adding photos or personalized graphics . Your face, your pets face, a favorite vacation phototheres nothing that cant be printed, wraparound style, onto the JBL Flip 5. Just remember, the graphics are forever, even if the summer fling isnt.

Durability And Build Quality: Rugged With Protection Built

Like with most other JBL products, ruggedness and durability was a clear focus in the design of the Flip 5. The grille that covers most of the device is actually a rigid shell with tightly woven fabric, giving me no qualms about tossing this speaker onto the ground. The rest of the chassis is built of a soft-tough, but tough rubberized plastic that should provide a lot of shock absorption. This all gives me a lot of confidence in this speakers ability to take a beating, making it a perfect companion for hikes, pool parties, beach days, and other locales that might damage more delicate electronics.

The other side of the durability coin is water resistance. Like most speakers in the class, JBL has taken the time to earn IPX7 water resistance, which means that the speaker can technically be submerged in 3 meters of water for a reasonable amount of time. These tests are done in lab conditions though, so considering youll likely be running your real world tests in chlorinated water or under other unideal conditions, we dont recommend dropping the speaker into water for fun. What the IPX7 rating actually amounts to is a perfectly durable speaker for use in the rain or on a poolside table getting splashed.

JBL isnt leaving behind the Flip 5, which is arguably simply as excellent for most eventualities, but if you’re to go that route, wait till the associated fee drops. Theres not a lot to unbox with the Flip 6. JBL may glance to slim down its packaging, or at least print a picture of the speakers true dimensions at the facet, so as not to give the impact its bigger than it in fact is. Other than the speaker itself, youll find a USB-C charging cable and fast start information.

JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker Review

The JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker comes in your typical JBL box. It displays an image of the product, along with the companys logo and the speakers name on opposite corners. Below the image, youll see that JBL noted that their Flip 5 is Bluetooth-enabled.

Now, our JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker review will discuss whats inside the box. Aside from the Flip 5 Bluetooth speaker, youll also find a Type-C USB cable, quick start guide, and warranty card.

We appreciate JBL for keeping the speaker, plus the additional accessories, organised and secured to prevent any damages during transit.

    Little Speaker Big Sound

The Flip 5s portability and robust, waterproof design makes it a worthy partner for your outdoorsy, poolside, beach vibe adventuresbut the real reason youll want to bring it along is how great it sounds.

I spent days listening to this speaker at a low volume at my desk I brought it along to Ocean Beach and listened to it at reasonable volumes in a beach tent and I hung it from my showerhead and listened to it over the din of running water. No matter how or where I used the Flip 5, it was nothing short of splendid.

Even partially buried in sand, the Flip 5 provides robust, balanced sound that can be loud enough for the whole yard or quiet enough for private listening.

The sound quality here is leagues beyond my older go-to Bluetooth speaker, the Sony SRS-XB2. The Flip 5s rumbling bass endcaps and round speaker chassis provide a full-bodied sound that can be loud enough to irritate your neighbors across the street, but also quiet enough to use in an almost private capacity.

Where Im most impressed by the Flip 5 is its bass response. JBLs designwhich pumps low-end frequencies out of both ends of the conical speaker, allowing the end caps to rumble and move freely as neededprovides a seriously satisfying level of bass, especially considering how relatively small and portable this speaker is.

The bass resonators at either end of the Flip 5 are the secret to its low-end-friendly sound.

    Jbl Flip 5 Review: Verdict

Since its first version, the Flip has been one of the best portable Bluetooth speakers. The Flip 5 does just enough to keep it among the leaders. It combines an easy-to-carry design with better-than-average bass. This version costs a bit more than the Flip 4, but it is still usually cheaper than the Boom 3.

If you have a Flip 4, you probably dont need to upgrade the biggest difference is the number of colors you can choose from and USB-C charging. If youre debating between the Flip 5 and the Boom 3, the choice comes down to portability versus sound: the Flip 5 is a little more portable, while the Boom 3 sounds a little better overall. Youll be happy either way.
