But Wait What About The Newer Jbl Flip 5
If youre looking at the JBL Flip 4 and still wondering if you should instead just get the newer JBL Flip 5, then there are just a few things that you should know for. The biggest difference is going to be sound quality. While the Flip 4 doesnt sound bad by any means, its clearly designed with a priority on toughness. The newer JBL Flip 5 is also tough but packs larger 44mm drivers instead of the 40mm ones found on the Flip 4. This means you can expect a subtly better low end when listening to music and this is exactly what we found in our full review of the speaker.
Overall, the design is similar to the previous Flip 4.
Because of this, the JBL Flip 5 is also ever so slightly larger than the Flip 4, but JBL made use of that size by packing a larger battery inside . While you might think that this will improve battery life drastically, it actually remains the same at about 12 hours of constant playback which should be fine for most people anyway. The Flip 5 also has USB-C charging and quick charging so you can charge the speaker with the same cable that charges your Android phone.
Its still small enough to fit in your bag and comes with a string, though Id recommend swapping it out for some paracord.

What About The Connection Strength
Lets circle back to that JBL Connect+ plus button for a second because this is one of my biggest complaints with this speaker. If you remember the Flip 3 also had a JBL Connect button, but this one is Connect+ and that extra plus sign makes a huge difference. While the old one could only connect two JBL speakers together, this new Connect+ button can connect up to 100. Pretty great, until you realize that you cant connect to any previous speaker that doesnt have Connect+.
So if you have another speaker and were hoping to connect the Flip 4 to it youre out of luck. This is a real bummer because the Flip series isnt so expensive that its impossible to imagine someone buying one every time a new one comes out, and now they cant even connect them together.
The JBL Flip 4 has its playback buttons slightly raised above the fabric.
Okay rant over. Besides that, Ive had no issues with the connection aspect of this speaker. The signal stayed strong regardless of where I was in the house, which practically means about 50 feet with a few walls in the way. If youre outdoors Im sure you can push it a bit more as well, as I got well past 50 feet when I took it to the beach though, to be fair, I didnt have a measuring tape to get an exact distance. The playback controls also work very well and the buttons are nice and clicky so youre not left wondering whether youve actually pressed it or not.

Jbl Flip 4 Portable Speaker Sets Guinness World Record
JBL just scooped a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for Most Bluetooth Speakers Playing from a Single Source by successfully playing over 1,000 Flip 4 Bluetooth speakers simultaneously from a single media source. Recently launched JBL Flip 4 is the newest in the highly successful series of JBL Flip portable Bluetooth speakers.
Organized as part of ongoing celebrations surrounding JBLs 70th birthday, the #JBLWorldRecord event took the form of an exclusive party in London on April 25th. The trendy warehouse ambiance of Village Underground was chosen to host the festivities, which included a live set by world famous Dutch DJ duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, as well as an exclusive soundtrack featuring many of JBLs current music ambassadors, such as Demi Lovato, DNCE, Tinie Tempah and Quincy Jones.
But the life of the party was of course the JBL Flip 4, whose in-built CONNECT+ technology was put to the test in an attempt to beat the World Record set in 2016 by Ultimate Ears with 208 PartyUp speakers. Expectations were sky high for JBL as 1,000 Flip 4 Bluetooth speakers arranged on a circular platform were connected to a single source, forming an incredible 360° wall of sound.
With this fantastic accomplishment by JBL, HARMAN has once again pushed the boundaries of audio innovation. Congratulations JBL Flip 4!

Works Great For Party Boosting Flip 5 If Done Right
Initially, I experienced an issue reported by others with two Flip 5s. When trying to pair, there was constant static/disconnect rendering them unusable. JBL responded that only one speaker can be connected to your phones Bluetooth and the other connects through the app to the other speaker. I can listen with party boost or stereo modes easily. The one issue is that once I set up which mode I want, I cannot open the app and easily change between the modes. It wants you to reconnect the speakers, essentially start over. However, overall an easy way to party boost/stereo your speakers.

How Does The Jbl Flip 4 Sound
The Flip 4 doesnt have a big, booming sound but its still good considering its size and price.
If you were looking for the Flip 4 to be a huge improvement in terms of sound quality over the previous model, Im sorry to disappoint. The Flip 4 sounds very similar to the previous model. Now that isnt a knock against the Flip 4 in any way because I really liked the sound of the Flip 3. There are only a few subtle differences here as far as I can tell, one of them being in the highs.
On the Flip 3, I found a slight distortion when the speaker was maxed out but that doesnt seem to be an issue on this new model. The finger slides that used to sound a little harsh in Cinder And Smoke by Iron & Wine is now much more controlled. You can still enjoy it without it bothering your ears which is a plus.
For such a compact speaker the JBL Flip 4 gets nice and loud, and has a consumer-friendly sound.
Not much has changed in the mids, with vocals still coming through loud and clear. Background instruments do get pushed off the side a bit but not enough to be an issue. The guitar and percussion in Life is Wonderful by Jason Mraz backs up the vocals perfectly throughout the track.
Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Verdict
So, which is the best Bluetooth speaker? If you’re prepared to forego the aux input, built-in microphone and stereo sound, the JBL Flip 5 delivers a serious sonic upgrade. It may be low on bells and whistles but it has the sonic chops to put many a rival in the shade. Plus, it floats, making it the best Bluetooth speaker for those who plan to take to the high seas.
This is far from a clear-cut choice, though. The JBL Flip 4 is arguably the more versatile travel buddy. It’s lighter, doubles as a speakerphone and has a handy aux in.
It’s also cheaper and you might even score a discount in the Black Friday sales. And if you already own one of JBL’s Connect or Connect+ speakers, it’s the obvious choice in terms of backwards compatibility.
So while the Flip 4 might not be the best Bluetooth speaker when it comes to pure sound quality, it’s still a fantastic buy for the money.

Should You Buy The Jbl Flip 4 In 2021
The Flip 4s $80 price tag makes this an absolute steal, even in 2021. In fact, we still consider the JBL Flip 4 the best-all around Bluetooth speaker for under $100. The Flip 4 sounds good, is light enough to be packed into a bag easily, and is durable enough to handle your next adventure.
For those still inclined to buy a speaker from the Flip product line, the updated JBL Flip 5 is definitely worth considering. If youre just not ready to commit to something this expensive, give the JBL Clip 3 a try: Its not as good, but then again, its also much cheaper.
All Lights On Test Mode
Entering the All Lights ON mode briefly lights all lamps on the speakers control panel, and then powers down the unit after two seconds. Note though that here, the speaker makes no falling guitar sound when it shuts off. But during this test, all the lights on the panel light up as shown next, including the battery gauge, the Bluetoothand Powerbuttons.
To enter this mode, press and hold the Bluetoothand Volume UP buttons that are highlighted in the next picture, for around ten seconds, until you see the lights all come on.
Once you enter All Lights ON, the lights remain lit for about two seconds before they all turn off. Then, the speaker returns to normal working condition once the lights go out. Doing this is one way to forcibly shut down the speaker should pressing the Power button fail to power it OFF.

Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Battery Life
The Flip 5 has a larger capacity battery than the Flip 4 so you might expect it to have a bit more stamina. Not so, both these speakers provide 12 hours playback.
Dig a little deeper and you’ll discover why: the Flip 5 outputs more power .
What’s more, the Flip 5 has a fast-charge USB-C port, meaning its battery will go from flat to full in just 2.5 hours. The Flip 4 takes around 3.5 hours to juice up.
In other words, when it comes to battery life the Flip 5 has the edge.
**Winner** JBL Flip 5
Jbl Flip 4 Vs Jbl Flip : Features
You might be surprised to discover that the newer JBL Flip 5 has fewer features than its predecessor, the Flip 4. Gone is the analogue aux input for wired listening, the noise-cancelling microphone for hands-free calls and voice assistant integration.
The Flip 4 also has two drivers for stereo sound, whereas the Flip 5 is a mono speaker. We’ll cover how this impacts performance in the ‘Sound Quality’ section , but if stereo sound is important you, the Flip 4 might be the one to go for.
The more eagle-eyed buyer might also spot that the Flip 4 has a ‘Connect+’ button, whereas the Flip 5 boasts PartyBoost.
Connect+, as seen on the Flip 4, Charge 4, Xtreme 2 and a few older JBL Bluetooth speakers, means you can make compatible speakers play the same song simultaneously, or set one of them as the left channel and one as the right for a greater sense of scale.
PartyBoost, found on the Flip 5 and Pulse 4, performs the same trick. It’s particularly useful as it means you can pair two mono Flip 5 speakers for stereo sound. You can also daisy-chain 100+ PartyBoost-compatible speakers to create an awesome wall of sound that would almost certainly earn you a visit from the local council.
When it comes to controls, the Flips keep it simple with rubberised buttons covering play/pause, volume adjustment and pairing. Both are compatible with the JBL Connect app, which, if fairly basic, and has no EQ setting adjustment.
**Winner** JBL Flip 4

Hows The Battery Life Of The Jbl Flip 4
JBL claims a battery life of about 12 hours, but in our initial testing, we got exactly 4 hours on max volume. Yeah, big difference. But the reason is because I feel like most people using a waterproof Bluetooth speaker are going to be using it outdoors, where its probably going to be on max volume. So thats how I tested it.
The speaker has a string that lets you conveniently hang it from wherever you want.
However, when I lower the volume to between 50-75% it reaches 12 hours easily. So thats something to keep in mind if you think youre going to be out somewhere like the beach. For a few hours you wont have a problem, but if youre planning a day trip or a day by the pool you might want to avoid high output or the speaker isnt going to make it.
