Classic Marshall Styling Slimmed Down
Youd be hard pressed to notice the difference at first glance between 2016s Major II Bluetooth and the new Major III Bluetooth. But compare them side by side and you realise they are slimmer and better looking, maintaining the classic Marshall styling in black vinyl.
In fact, the new headphones are 24g lighter, which combined with softer ear pads make them a touch more comfortable to wear. They still squeeze my head pretty hard, but the top band does give a bit so they will eventually wear in.
They are on-ear headphones, meaning they sit directly on your ear, not around it. The arms are slimmer and simplified, but maintain their height, twisting and tilting degrees of freedom so that they sit flat against your ear.

What Are The Marshall Major Iii Bluetooth
The Marshall Major III are on-ear wireless Bluetooth headphones made in the image of Marshalls guitar amplifiers.
Theyre fairly comfortable, not hugely expensive, sound good, and last up to 30 hours off a charge. Whats not to like?
Marshalls own MID Bluetooth dont cost much more than this £129 pair and offer better build quality. While the Marshall Major III arent quite the best-sounding headphones in their class, theyre a good choice for Marshall fans looking for a pair that isnt too garish or eye-catching.

Why Buy The Marshall Major Iii Bluetooth
I came away from the Marshall Major III with the same impression left by the Marshall MID Bluetooth. Their signature promotes rock guitar texture well and overall sound quality is perfectly fine. However, theyre one step below the top performers in their class, lacking some of the dynamics and scale that helps you get lost in music.
In addition, the Major III arent as well built, or attractive, as the MID Bluetooth, currently available for just a little more.
If you love the Marshall-inspired design then go ahead. However, if the priority is the best sound quality for your money, then look elsewhere.
Sound Quality Of Marshall Major Iii On
After my previous Marshall reviews I wasnt at all surprised that these headphones sound very good. The bass is quite strong and really resonant. Vocals were clear and the headphones sound quite balanced. The high sound quality, combined with the sound isolation make them ideal for travel or commuting, or trying to work distraction-free.
My Test Playlist:
- Put your hands where my eyes could see Busta Rhymes
- Chunky Bruno Mars
- You need to calm down Taylor Swift
- Cold War Kids So Tied Up
- Alice Merton No Roots
- Echame la Culpa Luis Fonsi

- 30+ hours of battery life
Speaking of battery life, Marshall claims the Major III can keep on rocking for 30 hours or more. We’re certainly inclined to believe that, as we’ve listened to them for well into double-digit hours and they’ve only dipped to 80 per cent battery.
Being a Bluetooth headphone, you’ll be pleased to know that we experienced no drop outs in connection at all, too. Which is a good thing, because you’ll want to keep listening to these headphones for hours on end.
The Marshall deliver a brilliantly balanced sound. We opted for the live version of Fleetwood Mac’s I’m So Afraid as a starting point, and we felt every drum beat, guitar string and emotion in Lindsey Buckingham’s vocal. It gave us goosebumps. Change to something a little more upbeat, like AC/DC, and once again the Marshall delivers a clear, detailed sound with no one frequency range overpowering the other.
Despite the company’s rock heritage, these cans suit a wide range of genres, so you’re not reserved to listening to just rock or metal. MK’s 17, an Ibiza dance tune if ever there was one, is one example that showed off how much enthusiasm these cans offer.
We could go on talking about how good various songs sound through the Major III Bluetooth, but we’d run out of words of praise.
Setting Up Marshall Major Iii On
Getting these headphones set up and paired was easy. To get them paired, push and hold the small copper button on the left ear cup for about five seconds at first youll hear the sound of them powering up, but keep holding an extra few seconds. Then go to your phones Settings Menu, then to Bluetooth and look for the Marshall Monitor III in your Bluetooth devices list, then click to connect.

Amplifier Design On Your Ears

- 3.5mm headphones jack
- Single control knob
- On-ear design
At first glance, the Major III Bluetooth don’t look too dissimilar to their predecessor, featuring the same square on-ear earcups complete with iconic white Marshall lettering that’s reminiscent of the company’s amplifiers.
However, there have been some changes to the overall aesthetic: the ear pads now feature a textured faux-leather finish, which we feel looks more premium compared to the vinyl covering on the previous model.
Removing the dedicated power button means there is just a Micro-USB charging port and 3.5mm headphone port for either listening to the headphones in passive mode or for friends to connect their own wired headphones so you can share music.
We like the overall build quality of the Major III. Sturdy and impeccably finished, these on-ears can comfortably survive being thrown in and out of bags without a case – which is handy, since Marshall doesn’t supply one.
The initial fit on the head may be a little snug for some, but the Major does ease up a little over time. We like a snug fit, though, as it helps to keep them fixed in place and block out external sounds too. There’s no active noise-cancelling to be found here, which Marshall saves for other headphones in its line-up.
