Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart

Running Cadence And Stride Length

Using Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart

Cadence* is the number of times the foot with the stride sensor* hits the ground per minute. Stride length* is the average length of one step. That is the distance between your right and left foot contacting the ground. Running speed = 2 * stride length * cadence. There are two ways to run faster: moving your legs at a higher cadence or taking longer steps. Elite long distance runners typically run with a high cadence of 85-95. On uphills, typical cadence values are lower. On downhills they are higher. Runners adjust stride length to gather speed: stride length increases as speed increases.Yet one of the most common mistakes novice runners make is over-striding. The most efficient stride length is the natural one the one that feels most comfortable. You will run faster in races by strengthening your leg muscles so they take you forward with a longer stride.

Earlier this week Polar announced their latest product though, its not a watch. Or even anything connected to a watch. Instead, its an accessory for smart phones that further illuminates Polars direction and protocol strategy going forward.

The Bluetooth Smart footpod is a running accessory that attaches to your running shoes and gives you speed/cadence data both indoors and out while connected to a smart phone. Incidentally, its actually the very first Bluetooth Smart footpod on the market. Ive been poking at it for a few weeks now and thus have a pretty good grasp on how it works. Note that Ill cover below how footpods work, but if youre looking for tons of detailed information check out this previous Everything you ever wanted to know about the footpod post. While that post focuses on an ANT+ variant, virtually everything is the same here.

Because I want to be transparent about my reviews Polar sent me the Bluetooth Smart Stride Sensor to try out. Once Im complete here, Ill send this back to them and then go out and buy my own . Simple as that. Sorta like hiking in wilderness trails leave only footprints. If you find my review useful, you can use any of the Amazon or Clever Training links from this page to help support future reviews.

So with that intro, lets get into things.

Getting It Installed On Your Shoe:

While fairly straight-forward, one of the issues with the Polar footpod design is that you have to unlace your shoes about 60-70% to get it installed. So you cant easily swap it between shoes .

Nonetheless, it only takes perhaps 2-3 minutes to do this. And, theres even instructions:

Once everything is laced up, youll go ahead and slide the footpod into the cradle:

It then gets locked in via a small rubber doohickey up top:

With that, youre ready to run!

Does The Fenix 6x Pro Work With Polar Stride Sensor

Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth Smart, ? ...

So, I just purchased my first ever Garmin after 21 years with polar.

My H10 HR transmitter works fine but how do I get my Polar Stride Sensor to work.

Ive been trying to calibrate my treadmill runs but Im not having any success.

I’ve seen a few reports on here by people using other foot pods so hopefully my old Polar Bluetooth Smart Stride Sensor should work

any guidance much appreciated

Is the sensor listed under Settings -> Sensors and Accessories? If not, can you add it ?

If you can add it, it should work, if I interpret this information in a 2013 post by DC Rainmaker correctly:’The only requirement that a watch need have is Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity , and the firmware programmed to support this Bluetooth Smart device profile.’

What goes wrong with the treadmill calibration?

  • Thanks for taking time to comment on this.

I have managed to pair my old stride sensor but the device ID does not match what is stamped on the sensor body?

I will try it tomorrow, fingers crossed.

I have done 3 runs on the treadmill and they have all been out even after doing the cal at the end.

    the last run was close, at 0.9 mile and 1.8 – 2.7 – 3.6 – 4.5 and 5.4 the watch told me i had run 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 miles.

i will update tomorrow how it goes.

    thanks

Set Correct Lap Distance

To calibrate the stride sensor manually by setting correct lap distance, choose Settings > Sport profiles > Running> Stride sensor > Calibration > Manual > Set correct lap distance

  • Press START in time view to enter pre-training mode, and scroll to the Running profile
  • Start a session, and run a distance you know that is more than 400 meters.
  • When you have the ran the distance, press START to take a lap.
  • Press and hold light to enter the Quick menu, and choose Stride sensor > Calibration > Manual > Set correct lap distance
  • Set the actual distance you have ran. The calibration factor is updated.
  • Uploading And Viewing The Data:

Once youve completed your workout you can go to Polars site and view your run in more detail . Their site PolarPersonalTrainer.com is free and is where all supported Polar units upload data to for analysis. As youll see, the site is fairly basic, and not exactly the pinnacle of graphical or user interface design but the core fundamentals are there.

Youll be able to open up your activity and get the summary information up top, along with a map of your run down below :

If I click on the Curve tab, I can enable cadence metrics to be displayed on the chart. You can then see the line all the way across. The brief drop you see about the 8-minute marker was getting through a fence.

And then finally, within the Data page, youll notice your stride length will be displayed. This is also where you can export out the data as well, along the bottom.

I did a quick test though and the stride did did not seem to be consumed by TrainingPeaks when importing in either of the two files . So your stride data is somewhat limited. Id really like to see Polar both improve their website and make it semi-competitive, as well as improve the data sharing/exporting pieces.

    Calibrate The Stride Sensor

Calibration of the stride sensor improves the accuracy of speed/pace and distance measurements. It is recommended that you calibrate the stride sensor before using it for the first time, if there are significant changes in your running style, or if the position of the stride sensor on the shoe is dramatically changed . The calibration should be done at the speed you normally run. If you run at different speeds, the calibration should be done at your average speed. You can calibrate the stride sensor manually or automatically.

When training with a stride sensor you can choose to use speed data from GPS or from the stride sensor. To set this go to Settings > Sport profiles > Running> Stride sensor > Choose sensor for speed, and choose Stride sensor or GPS.

      Pairing It To Your Phone:

Either before or after you tie it to your shoe, youll need to pair it to your phone. Today, that means any Apple iPad/iPod/iPhone with Bluetooth Smart. So essentially any iPhone 4s or higher.

Note, it does NOT support Android. Again, no Android. Not entirely the fault of Polar , but mostly because the Android Bluetooth Smart fitness profile situation is a mess right now with no adoption by Google and no concrete timetable beyond a few months . To be fair, Windows Phone is no better .

      So, Apple it is.

Youll need the free Polar Beat app, which is Polars iPhone app that came out last fall. Its actually quite good, and is probably the most visually pleasing product Polar has ever released. You can read my review on it here.

Once youve got that all set, youll go into Settings and then slide Stride Sensor.

Once you do that, itll trigger a Bluetooth search for the footpod .

And, if youve had it sitting on a desk for a bit, itll also have you shake the sensor to wake it up .

A split second later itll find the footpod and you can go ahead and tap Pair to pair it to the phone.

Once paired the phone will automatically remember it for future connections. Remember that Bluetooth Smart accessories can only be actively paired to a single device at once. Meaning if you have multiple phones/iPods/iPads and happen to have the Polar App on them and happened to have paired it to the footpod be sure that the app is closed when youre ready to run.

      Pairing It To A Watch:

How to use Polar Stride Sensor Bluetooth® Smart with Polar Beat application

Now I made a heading here simply in an effort to stem the tide of questions for folks asking Which watches does it work with?. In reality, this section is a trick-section. See, it works with no watches today. Not Polars, nor anyone else on the market.

There exists not a single unit or even app outside of the Polar Beat App that can connect to a Bluetooth Smart footpod.

I do think well see that change, and quite rapidly in fact. For example, the recently announced Tom-Tom Multisport watch could relatively easily introduce support for it given it has Bluetooth Smart in it. And, both the upcoming Bia and Leikr watches could add support.

The only requirement that a watch need have is Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity , and the firmware programmed to support this Bluetooth Smart device profile. Currently hardware-wise thats oddly limited to the Garmin Fenix and the Motorola Motoactv . And of course, down the line theres watches like the Bia and Leikr that have the hardware guts, but havent committed to the software side.

As for Polars watches theyve committed numerous times to developing a unit with Bluetooth Smart in it. Given nothing was announced this spring for it, I wouldnt expect to see any further announcements until the fall timeframe .
