How To Choose Headphones
With so many types of headphones, how do you know which pair is right for you? On the Consumer 101 TV show, Consumer Reports expert Elias Arias explains everything you need to know.
I want to live in a world where consumers take advantage of technology, not the other way around. Access to reliable information is the way to make that happen, and that’s why I spend my time chasing it down. When I’m off the clock, you can find me working my way through an ever-growing list of podcasts. Got a tip? Drop me an email or follow me on Twitter for my contact info on Signal.
B& o Play By Bang & Olufsen Over
We want to finish off this list with really great headphones, and the most natural way to go is Bang & Olufsen, they always have some of the very best products when it comes to sound.
These B& O PLAY headphones are great when you want to treat yourself. The headphones provide you with great sound, but you do save a little bit of money since they lack active noise cancelling. Theyre easy to use and a single touch is enough to answer phone calls via the touch controls, change track or adjust the volume, and you can use them while wearing gloves.
The battery time is up to 20 hours, which is really good, but you can of course use them with the cord if you run out of battery or want to increase the sound quality.
Most often its actually better to buy high audio quality headphones. You might feel like youre saving money when you buy the cheap price tag headphones, but to be honest, how often do those headphones last? If you end up buying new ones every six months you should just save yourself the time and trouble and spend the money in the beginning. That way youll be able to enjoy great sound quality and comfort all the time and it will save you money in the long run.
As we mentioned, Bang & Olufsen never disappoint, and the sound of the B& O PLAY headphone set is exceptional. If youre still not sure, go ahead and watch this YouTube video that will tell you everything you need to know about the headphones you can buy on amazon.
What Is Bluetooth Headphones
Bluetooth headset is the application of Bluetooth technology to hands-free headsets, allowing users to avoid the irritating wires, freely and easily achieve music, call and other functions in various ways.
With the development of Bluetooth technology and the growth of the Bluetooth headset market, segmented products focusing on sports, games, film and television, music, and car scenes have also emerged.
Benefits of a Bluetooth headset
You can listen to music while writing e-mails via Bluetooth headset, you can talk on the phone while driving, you can listen to books while doing housework, you can also watch movies and videos freely at night, listen to rock casually in the gym. Get rid of the constraints when playing games, no more annoying wires, no need to worry about noise disturbing others! It’s like a recent mobile phone advertisement for a Bluetooth headset: Free your hands and let them do what they should do.
The future tech of Bluetooth headphones
Bluetooth headset is currently the most popular and most abundant type of Bluetooth products. According to reliable news, now Japan’s SONY and South Korea’s Samsung have begun to extend Bluetooth technology to the field of 3D LCD TVs and home audio. Therefore, Bluetooth stereo headphones with high-quality sound effects will surely penetrate into ordinary family life.

Great Sound On The Go
The Bose SoundSport Wireless doesnt have active noise cancellation like the brands best-known models, but its one of CRs higher-rated portable Bluetooth models. The SoundSport has solid audio quality for the price and features a hybrid style earbud design that seals your ears without intruding deep inside them, which may be more comfortable for some people.
Bose gets an above-average rating for reliability in this category and stellar marks for owner satisfaction. According to Bose, this model is water-resistant and has a 6-hour battery life.
Best Iphone Headset With Mic Of 2021
Most headsets for mobile devices, even from well-established brands are still available in wired form for extra reliability during calls. However, since the iPhone no longer has a 3.5mm headphone jack, you wont be able to use any wired headset with iPhone right out of the box. Hence, we recommend picking up an Apple Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter if you plan to pick up any of the best wired headsets with mic on the list.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers
As mentioned earlier, the active noise cancellation on the Jabra Elite 85h does reduce some lower frequencies a tad, but it isnt nearly as effective as what you get from the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700. This fact kept the Elite 85h from being our noise-cancelling pick. But not everyone prioritizes active noise cancellation , and we liked every other aspect of the Elite 85h so much that we were able to let this flaw slide.
The Jabra Sound+ app includes a few bonus features that seem nice but dont really deliver. The Smart Active ANC turns ANC or situational awareness on based on your surroundings. We gave it a trial run, but we found it less than useful and ended up turning the feature off. Find My Jabra is designed to help you locate misplaced headphones, but the tracking applies only to where the headphones were last powered on in proximity to the device with the app. If you turn the headphones off and move them, for example, the map doesnt update. Plus, the mapping isnt room-by-room specific. So youll know your missing cans were last turned on somewhere in the building, but not specifically where or even if theyre still around.
As with most wireless headphones we tested in this category, with the Elite 85h the included cord doesnt have a remote or mic. However, Jabras active noise cancelling will work while youre listening via a cord, as will the headphones volume controls, albeit independently of the device .

Sennheiser Hd 450 Btnc
The Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC is a fantastic pair of Bluetooth headphones. It gives you the option to use it wireless with Bluetooth or wireless with an auxiliary. They sound excellent with a great balance between the lows, mids, and highs. Sennheiser created an app called CapTune that comes with the purchase of these headphones.
It allows you to better EQ the headphones to find your exact taste of how you want it to sound. While Im more than impressed by the flat EQ sound without the app, Captune certainly has a setting to fit just about anyones needs.
To activate the noise cancellation mode, you must hold both volume buttons at the same time. While its a bit harder to activate the ANC than most headphones, its most definitely worth it. The noise-cancellation one of the best on this list. After all, this is also one of the more expensive pairs on the list.
In terms of comfort, I give these a 9 out of 10. They were not the most comfortable at first. After about 30 minutes, they loosened up and felt like nothing was there. These Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC are overall a great pair of headphones that used to be running for $200 but now below $150. I highly recommend them.
Bose 700 Headphones Review: Bose Music App
Just like the hardware in these headphones, the Bose Music app has a clean, sleek appearance. The app is packed with features and settings, which you can use to adjust the noise-cancellation level, choose between digital assistants and pick how much of your own voice you can hear on a call.
You can also control your music via the app, including changing tracks and adjusting volume. The app additionally allows you to customize your noise-cancellation favorites from the default 10, 5 and Off. There’s also a product tour and FAQ in case you need to do a bit of troubleshooting.
As smooth as using the app is, I’d like to see the company add two features: a find-my-headphones function and a few equalizer presets for people who prefer to tune their own listening experience.

Studio Style For Half The Price
The Sennheiser HD 250BT is a relative newcomer, but it makes a mark for providing great sound at a bargain price. The HD 250BT is an on-ear model with a sleek appearance and a price that sometimes dips below $70, making this one of the best values among Bluetooth headphones in our ratings.
It has controls for volume, calls, and playback, a smartphone app for equalizer adjustments, and an advertised 25-hour battery life. It also charges over USB-C, the same cable that powers newer Mac laptops and tons of other devices. Sennheiser is a winner for reliability and owner satisfaction, too, earning superb ratings in both categories.
Bose 700 Headphones Review: Controls
Bose didn’t load the 700 up with a ton of buttons, which I appreciate. The buttons that are present are slim, slightly raised and positioned along the back of the ear cups. Along the right ear cup, you have the Power / Pairing button and the digital assistant button, while the left has the noise-cancellation / conversation-mode buttons. The three buttons have a nice click when pressed and are easy to find when you’re out and about.
But Bose didn’t stop at buttons. That’d be rather pedestrian in this day and age. The company also added a touch-control panel discreetly hidden in the right ear cup and controlled with a series of swipes. A quick upward swipe raises the volume, while a downward slash lowers that setting. To skip tracks forward or backward, swipe forward or backward, respectively. To play or pause, quickly double-tap the cup. Aside from getting the tap cadence down pat, the touch controls are easy to master, and they made sure that I rarely had to touch my smartphone.

Bose 700 Headphones Review: Smart Assistants
The 700s have Alexa baked right into the interface. And depending on the connected device, you can access Siri or Google Assistant . All you have to do is push the VPA button, and your default assistant will be there.
People who use Alexa can trigger Amazon’s assistant with the usual voice command. However, you’ll have to press the VPA button to summon Siri or Google Assistant. Unfortunately, Samsung owners like myself will have to whip out our smartphones if we want to communicate with Bixby.
Still, this is one of the few headphones I would use regularly with a digital assistant. It was nice tapping a button and hearing notifications from Gmail, Facebook and Pokemon Go. And when I got bored with these notices, another quick press of the digital assistant button returned me to my jams.

Our Pick: Jabra Elite 85h
*At the time of publishing, the price was $150.
There is an elegant simplicity to the design of the Jabra Elite 85h over-ear headphones, which may not sound like a big dealunless youre familiar with the myriad small annoyances present in most of the competition. Whereas other Bluetooth headphones can have confusing and fiddly buttons that often cause you to trigger the wrong task, the Elite 85h set has straightforward controls and a painless pairing process across all device platforms. These headphones work with the Amazon, Apple, and Google digital assistants, too. The sound quality is great for both music and phone calls, the headphones fit comfortably, and the set features a 36-hour battery life. Plus, you get passable noise cancellation and a two-year warranty against rain damage. Overall, the Jabra Elite 85h headphones embody ease of use, and theyre just plain enjoyable to pick up and wear. And their reasonable price means you wont be afraid to use them every day.
The Elite 85h headphones feel well built, with fabric accents and soft memory-foam padding. They just feel less plasticky than many similarly priced competitors. So feel free to savor that emo moment of walking in a drizzle while listening to the Cure, without worrying about ruining your headphones.
Do Cheap Headphones Have A Microphone
Some cheap headphones have a microphone, but not all. It doesnt depend on price but technology. Some of the most expensive headphones lack a microphone. But in general, wireless headphones have a built-in mic, no matter the price.
If looking for wired headphones, check if they have a casing or inline controls on the cable. If not, they probably dont have a mic.

Who Should Get This
Bluetooth wireless headphones are for people who dont like to be tethered to their music devices and are willing to pay a little more for that freedom. Theyre also for people who own smartphones that lack headphone jacks and would rather not deal with special adapters to attach a wired pair of headphones. Bluetooth audio quality has come a long way, but you should still expect to pay more for wireless headphones that sound comparable to the best wired headphones.
This guide focuses on over-ear and on-ear headphones, which are obviously larger and heavier than earbuds but are also the preferred type for anyone who doesnt like the feel of wearing in-ear headphones. If youre looking for our take on Bluetooth earbuds, see For those who prefer wireless earbuds below. Bear in mind that with wireless earbuds, the battery wont last as long, and youll likely pay more to get similar or slightly inferior performance compared with that of the top wireless headphones in this guide.
Also, if youre looking for a pair of over-ear headphones to use while working, and your tasks include a lot of video chatting, phone calls, or work with dictation software, you may want to consider an office headset with a boom mic. You can find wireless options, even a few that sound pretty good while playing music. Check out our office headset guide to learn more.
Whether you prefer over-ear or in-ear noise-cancelling headphones, we have recommendations to help bring peace to your next trip.
