    • I like my product. It is easy to use. The price was unbelievable. Thelma
    • Highly unreliable. I finally used my old Bayer glucose meter to check against my ReliOn results, and ReliOn reads 30+ mg/dL higher than the Bayer meter, which seems to be correct when correlated with my A1C. The stores dont carry the control solution, so you have to order and wait 2 weeks. I cant go that long without having an accurate meter, and Walmart should not send out a meter with such a large discrepancy, IMO. They did refund my money. Amy

Accuracy Evaluation Of Five Blood Glucose Monitoring Systems: The North American Comparator Trial

Go to: Abstract This study evaluated differences in accuracy between the CONTOURĀ® NEXT EZ blood glucose monitoring system and four other BGMSs . Methods Up to three capillary blood samples were collected from 146 subjects with and without diabetes. One sample per subject was tested with fresh blood the other samples were glycolyzed to lower blood glucose to < 70 mg/dl. Meter results were compared with results from plasma from the same sample tested on a Yellow Springs Instruments 2300 STAT Plus glucose analyzer. Blood glucose monitoring system accuracy was compared using mean absolute relative difference and other analyses. Separate analyses on fresh samples only were conducted to determine potential effects of glycolysis on MARD values of systems utilizing glucose-oxidase-based test strip chemistry. Across the tested glucose range, the EZ had the lowest MARD of 4.7% the ACAP, FFL, OTU2, and TT had MARD values of 6.3%, 18.3%, 23.4%, and 26.2%, respectively. For samples with glucose concentrations < 70 mg/dl, the EZ had the lowest MARD , compared with the ACAP , FFL , OTU2 , and TT systems. The EZ had the lowest MARD across the tested glucose ranges when compared with four other BGMSs when all samples were analyzed as well as when natural samples only were analyzed. Best For Travel: Freestyle Lite Blood Glucose Monitoring System

    • Works on multiple testing sites

    • Large, backlit display

    • Small enough to fit pockets

    • Less accurate than non-travel meters

When youre on the move, a compact and minimally invasive glucometer can be the key to successful diabetes management. This pick from FreeStyle is designed with travel in mind. Its small enough to fit easily in your pocket or purse, and it has a large enough LED display to be easy to read. It requires a smaller blood sample size than most monitors to provide an accurate reading in just five seconds, and it works on several testing sites, so you can give your fingertips a rest whenever necessary.

The FreeStyle Lite doesnt require coding, keeping your testing process simple no matter where you are. The monitor can store up to 400 results, noting both the date and time, and it provides 7-, 14-, and 30-day averages, too. It also comes with four alarm reminders to help keep you on track when your daily routine fluctuates.

Result Speed: 5 seconds | Included in Kit: Test light, reminder alarms, test strips sold separately

    • Does not include control solution

When youre testing from the comfort of your own home, its easier to get a little bit more high tech with your monitoring system. This glucometer from AUVON utilizes cutting-edge test trips that consistently surpass international accuracy standards. The strips are produced using an automatic carbon printing technique, which ensures that they remain both stable and precise.

Walgreens True 2 Go Glucose Meter

This compact version of the True Metrix brand meters offers better portability than the other larger meters.

All basic functions are the same as the other True Metrix meters including:

    • No coding required
    • 3-volt battery
    • Uses True Metrix test strips

You will notice that the advanced feature of event tagging is not available with this more compact version. The main benefit to using the True 2 Go meter is that it allows you to discretely keep your blood sugar meter with you while on the go. If you dont have the room to keep a larger meter with you, this meter may be the better option for you. However, for better data management and overall blood sugar control, Id definitely recommend also having another one of the True Metrix meters as well. The event tagging feature is a great way to keep track of your levels in a more accurate manner.

While you still can do this more detailed data collection with the True 2 Go meter, it requires a manual method of recording your blood sugar levels and any particular notes about those readings via a diabetes logbook.

    Basic Blood Glucose Meters

At its simplest, a glucometer is a hand-held instrument with a digital screen that’s used with disposable test strips treated with chemicals that react to glucose. Some glucose meters come with a lancing devicean instrument that uses a spring-loaded needle to create a tiny puncture in the skin, from which a blood sample is obtained. Lancing devices and lancets can be purchased separately, however, and the size of the lancet can be adjusted depending on personal comfort.

To get a blood glucose measurement, a person draws a blood sample and carefully touches it to a test strip that’s been inserted into the device. The test strip absorbs the blood, and then an electronic circuit detects the glucose on the strip, displaying it as a number on the screen, usually within seconds.

Most meters run on batteries and have at least a minimal amount of memory for storing results. With very few exceptions, most also have the capability to download and store results to a computer.

It comes packaged with a lancing device, 10 lancets, user manual and quick start guide, carrying case, and two 3-volt lithium batteries. Once you apply a small drop of blood to the test strip, you receive results within 5 seconds.
    • User reviews. This meter received mixed reviews on the CVS website. Many reported inaccurate readings in some cases, results that were wildly off, whereas others only noticed a difference of 10 to 20 points to comparative readings. Some reviewers noted that the problem could be due to user error because this meter requires the blood drop to be placed at the very end of the test strip, where it can be quickly sucked up into the right spot.
    • Its not spot-on accurate, so if you are looking for something that will always be accurate within a few points, this device isnt it.
